It is fascinating to see how far India’s commercial automobile industry has come in the last few years
In this post, I shall describe the details of an electric truck from the perspective of the driver. The Indian EV industry has been growing by leaps and bounds. This is valid for the passenger vehicle segment, as well as the commercial vehicle category. We know that public transportation has been using EVs for a while in our country. This includes electric buses, tuk-tuks and other electric three-wheelers. However, electric trucks have not been all that popular just yet. For now, let us delve into the details of this latest case.
Electric Truck Driver Reveals Real Life Details
This post stems from Transport Live on YouTube. The host is with an electric truck and its driver in Rajasthan. The latter openly expresses his experience about the electric truck including its cost and daily usage. Firstly, he mentions that this truck costs a whopping Rs 1.25 Crore. Furthermore, he says that in comparison, the regular diesel truck bears a retail sticker of somewhere around Rs 45 lakh. Apart from that, he informs the host that the truck possesses 8 battery packs while enable a range of around 150 km on a single charge. The electric truck has an automatic transmission which is a boon for the driver.
Also, it costs around Rs 1,500 to charge the truck once. On the inside, the truck has AC, a music system, digital instrument cluster and all the basic modern amenities. It takes 90 mins to charge fully using a high-energy source which requires 3-phase power. During this time, the driver can rest or have meal breaks. However, the most important and impressive aspect is that it can easily reach speeds of around 80 km/h regardless of how much load it is carrying. This is a testament to the inherent torque delivery in electric cars. That is a huge advantage over the diesel version. All in all, it could certainly be worth an attempt to try out electric trucks to power the nation’s economy.
My View
I understand the challenges pertaining to EVs both for the passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The biggest one is the lack of charging infrastructure. We, of course, don’t want to see stranded electric trucks on the highways. Having said that, the government and private players have been developing infrastructure around EV charging stations rapidly in the last couple of years. With time, we will have a dense network of public charging stations across the nation. Therefore, electric trucks can be immensely feasible in the coming years.
