Hyundai has now launched the BS6 compliant Elantra Diesel, with its engine borrowed from Seltos. Now, it is the only diesel sedan in its segment.

Hyundai has launched the BS6 compliant Elantra diesel with prices to be disclosed once the lockdown is lifted. The facelifted version got a 2.0 Litre BS6 compliant petrol engine but no diesel engine. Hyundai has discontinued its couple of existing diesel engines.

BS6 Hyundai Elantra Diesel uses a 1.5 Litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The same unit came first on Kia Seltos, followed Hyundai Creta and Verna. These four cars share the same engine that produces 115 PS and 250 Nm of peak torque. The motor comes mated to a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AT.

Elantra diesel comes in two variants SX and SX(O), the latter getting AT gearbox as standard. Earlier, it came with a 1.6 Litre diesel engine that produced 128 BHP and 260 Nm of peak torque. Now, it is the least powerful diesel sedan in its class.

Actually, there is no other diesel sedan sold in its segment. Toyota has discontinued the Corolla Altis and Skoda has shut down Octavia. So now, the segment only consists of Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra, the former only available in BS6 petrol engine.

However, Honda has confirmed that Civic will get a diesel engine shortly. Due to the lockdown, the production and development has been stopped at its plant. Civic came with a 1.6 Litre i-DTEC diesel engine that produced 118 BHP and 300 Nm of peak torque. So before Elantra goes its BS6 engine, Civic was the least powerful of all.

Hyundai’s 1.4 Litre diesel and 1.6 Litre diesel engines were ageing and proved too costly to upgrade. So, right from Venue to Elantra, all are using the 1.5 Litre engine. In fact, the new generation i20 which is due this year, will also get the same engine but in a detuned manner.
