The Hyundai Elite i20 has taken the premium hatchback segment by storm in India and with the addition of the cross variant, the i20 Active, the car’s future is looking very bright. Even if we talk only about the Elite i20, the latest upper-B segment hatchback from Hyundai has been doing very well on the sales chart and recently, it has emerged that Hyundai India has managed to sell over 1 lakh units of this car in last 11 months! And what’s even better is that HMIL is not resting on its laurels and instead, has plans of expanding the i20 range by bringing in the Hyundai Elite i20 Diesel Automatic in near future. Although the company has not confirmed anything yet, there are reports suggesting that the diesel version of the Elite i20 will come with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Prices for the Hyundai i20 Diesel Automatic will be approximately more than the standard manual car by INR 70,000-90,000.

  • As is the case with automatic versions of most of the cars sold in India the automatic gearbox will be available with the top of the line Asta trim.
  • Hyundai could also offer the automatic with the Sportz or Sportz (O) trim  in order to price the Hyundai i20 Diesel Automatic more competitively.
  • The car will come loaded with features such as automatic climate control, push-button start, Bluetooth connectivity, etc.
  • Hyundai could also offer the automatic version with the headlamps from the Active i20 which gets LED daytime running lights and projector units.

The Hyundai i20 Diesel Automatic will get a 6-speed automatic gearbox borrowed from the Elantra instead of the Verna‘s 4-speed unit. The diesel motor, which is a 1.4 litre unit, produces 89 bhp and 220 Nm and returns a very healthy 22.54 kmpl (claimed). With the addition of the automatic transmission, these fuel efficiency figures are likely to take a slight dip.

The Hyundai i20 is already a very competent hatchback and would do well with an optional automatic transmission. However, this addition will bump up prices to around the INR 9 lakh mark (ex-showroom) which is slightly on the higher side for a hatchback. But the Indian audience is maturing fast and might be ready to shell out extra money for the added convenience of an automatic transmission.
