Hyundai Grand i10 Nios vs Rivals – Engine Specifications against Swift and Figo!

We put the specs of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios vs its rivals – the Swift and the Figo – in comparison to see which of these hatchbacks fares better on paper.

Hyundai launched the Grand i10 Nios in India last week at a starting price of Rs 4.99 Lakhs to Rs 7.99 Lakhs (ex-showroom). The Grand i10 is right now in its third-generation and has been one of the most popular hatchbacks in the segment. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios goes against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Ford Figo in the mid-size hatchback segment. Here we will take a closer look on how the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios vs its rivals seems on paper in terms of engine specification.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios continues with the 1.2L, petrol that was found in the last-gen Grand i10 but has been updated to meet the BS-VI emission norms. Both the Swift and the Grand i10 Nios use a similar engine configuration with an exactly similar power and torque outputs. The Figo however gets two petrol engines, both of which are considerably more powerful than the ones on the Swift and Grand i10 Nios.

As for the transmissions, all cars get a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard with the option of an automatic gearbox. Hyundai has ditched the previous 4-speed torque converter from the last-gen Grand i10 in favour of a 5-speed AMT, making it similar to the Swift. The Ford Figo however gets a 6-speed torque converter gearbox. Only the Ford Figo still does not comply with the BS-VI emission norms.

As for the diesel engines, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios carries over the 1.2L, diesel engine from the last-gen Grand i10. While the Maruti Suzuki Swift also uses a 1.2L, diesel engine, the Swift gets 4-cylinder and the Grand i10 Nios has three cylinder. Both engines still produce the same power and torque figures. Here again, the Ford Figo edges ahead with a larger 1.5L, 4-cylinder engine with considerable more power and torque figures.

The transmission options for all the diesel engines include a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. However, while that is all the Ford Figo has to offer, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios ad the Maruti Suzuki Swift offer a 5-speed AMT gearbox as an option as well. Here again, the Ford Figo does not comply with the BS-VI emission norms while the other two do.

So as we can see from the figures, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Maruti Suzuki Swift are exactly the same on paper. The Ford Figo edges ahead in terms of power and torque figures with both its petrol and diesel engines. However, the Figo still does not comply with the BS-VI emission norms while the other two already do. The Figo also does not get an automatic option with its diesel engine. All these cars are priced very nearly to each other.
