Kerosene vs Diesel – Better Bike Chain Cleaner

This video comes from MECHANICAL TECH HINDI on YouTube. He is a prominent YouTuber who makes content around automobile maintenance and other aspects around vehicles. This time around, he has 4 components to clean the chain of his bike – Kerosene, Diesel, Chain Cleaner and WD-40. To demonstrate the effectiveness of each of these, he cleans a portion of the chain with every agent. In the end, he shows the viewers that there is hardly any difference between the cleaning of any of these. That is quite interesting. It is established that all these are effective products to clean the chain of bikes.

However, he mentions that the bigger issue is what should be used as a lubricating agent. Most people use burnt engine oil or grease. While both of these have lubricating properties, they can have a negative impact on the chain in the long term. These can’t prevent debris and dust accumulation. As a result, the YouTuber recommends dedicated lubricating agents or gear oil. The former can be used if you wish to spend some money. If not, the gear oil works just fine. He is, in fact, using all these products on his own bike.

While everyone can have different opinions about this, generally, it is advised to lubricate the chain and other components every 500-1,000 km. On the other hand, the chain must be cleaned every 1,500-2,000 km. These are broad milestones that one could keep in mind. Apart from that, everything depends on the actual condition of the chain. The condition of the chain can determine the performance and mileage of your bike. Hence, it is of prime importance that these must be a part of your regular practice to maintain bikes.
