The Indian SUV maker has been developing special vehicles for the defence forces for a long time now
In this post, we take a look at the specifics of a Thar-based ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) created by Mahindra for the Indian defence sector. In the past, I have reported on a few cases of some special vehicles by Mahindra to aid our soldiers in high-altitude border areas. The priorities for a vehicle in such conditions are totally different from those of passenger cars. The Indian automobile giant seems to understand that comfortably and ends up engineering cars that can excel in extreme conditions. This new ATV certainly looks like yet another such product.
Mahindra Thar-based ATV For Indian Armed Forces
The Chairman & Team Leader at Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, took to his X handle to announce the details about this impressively engineered ATV. His post said, “Presenting the Mahindra ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) No excess. No ornamentation. Just focussed capability. Every bar, every mount, every inch of clearance has a job to do. From airdrop readiness to mission-grade protection, a gun mount, complete underbody protection, tandem tyre carrier configuration, jerrycan holders, a windshield protector & a front winch ensuring enhanced survivability, versatility, and operational effectiveness across diverse terrains. Purpose-built for our security forces, & proud to serve them But to me, this is more than a specialised machine. This is what our DNA looks like… stripped to its essentials It’s a window into what sits at the heart of every Mahindra vehicle: resilience, adaptability, and the will to go anywhere…”
He unequivocally highlights the rugged exterior styling of the ATV along with incredibly attractive components, which can become a part of the battlefield in no time. This includes aspects like windshield protection, underbody protection, mission-grade protection, a gun mount, front winch and much more. In addition, the Thar already comes with powerful engine options and usable off-roading capabilities. Hence, our defence services can safely rely on the build quality and tough nature of this ATV. In essence, Mahindra has put all of its experience and expertise into designing this vehicle, which can be a great advantage for the Indian Army when needed.

Having followed Mahindra’s defence mobility projects over the years, I can say this Thar-based ATV reflects a clear understanding of real-world military requirements. Unlike civilian SUVs, vehicles for armed forces need to prioritise durability, modularity and ease of repair over comfort or features. What stands out to me is the focused, no-nonsense approach, where every element serves a purpose in extreme terrains. In many ways, this also reinforces Mahindra’s core strength, building rugged, go-anywhere machines that are well-suited for Indian conditions.
