A video has emerged online which showcases the Tata Nexon with a large panoramic sunroof. It has been raining sunroofs in India in recent times. Carmakers are aware of the Indian customers’ obsession with sunroofs. In the compact SUV segment, the Mahindra XUV3XO became the first product to offer a large sunroof. The others possess a regular single-pane sunroof. Tata Motors witnessed a decline in sales of the Nexon in the last couple of months. To create buzz around the Nexon, the Indian auto giant will now launch the Nexon with a panoramic sunroof.
Tata Nexon To Get Panoramic Sunroof
This video comes from bunnypunia on Instagram. It captures the host at what looks like the Tata Motors manufacturing plant. He is sitting inside the new top model of the Nexon which now gets a large panoramic sunroof. He clearly shows the bigger sunroof in a functional condition. It spreads the length of the roof. He mentions that this feature will most likely restricted to the top model which will have a price tag of around Rs 16 lakh, ex-showroom. The current top model costs Rs 15.80 lakh, ex-showroom already. That might be a steep ask for an SUV in this segment. However, there are also reports about the Nexon getting Level 2 ADAS in the higher trims.
Specs
If this model launches with the larger sunroof, I am certain that it will be a minor update and the specifications will remain the same. Hence, there will be a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine making 120 PS / 170 Nm and 115 PS / 260 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. There are many options for the transmission including – 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 6-speed AMT and 7-speed DCT. At present, the prices range from Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 15.80 lakh, ex-showroom. With the addition of new features, the top trim could cost even more.

Our View
I am of the opinion that sunroof is not such a useful feature for most car buyers in India. Our country mostly has extremely hot weather conditions apart from the mountain states. Hence, having a sunroof doesn’t quite make sense. On top of that, the issue of pollution is also prevalent in major Indian cities. Therefore, one can’t keep the sunroof open in any case. Still, people have this weird obsession with sunroof for some reason. Perhaps it is due to the fact that they relate it to luxury. That is why carmakers have started offering sunroofs in cars close to the entry-level segments and in mid-variants within the models. We shall have to see if offering the larger sunroof brings a positive impact on the sales of the Nexon going forward or not.
