Well, think again if you ever thought that Maruti Suzuki has given up on the Celerio hatchback. While it’s true that this car has been facing a lot of heat from newer, and arguably better, competition, India’s largest selling carmaker has plans to give its B-segment contender a much-needed shot in the arm. Maruti plans to soon launch the Celerio Cross aka Celerio X. At present, not much is known about this crossover. The only spy pic that we have seen so far shows a test mule in an orange paint job. This could be a hint that the company plans to launch this new model in really vibrant colours. Giving a validation to the car’s crossover aspirations will be a plastic body cladding and larger wheels The alloy wheels will have a dual-tone black-silver finish and the wheel arches will also get some plastic cladding. In all probability, there will be no change in the suspension other than a marginal increase in the ground clearance. The Maruti Celerio X (Cross) has already been shown at last year’s Geneva Motor Show.
There won’t be any change in the specifications or the mileage. Akin to the current model, the Celerio Cross will come with the same 1.0-litre K-series 3-cylinder petrol engine. The company doesn’t seem to have any plans of bringing the low-capacity 800cc 2-cylinder Diesel engine back to life. The petrol engine outputs a decent power-torque of 67 BHP-90 Nm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed AMT automatic. Expect both these options to be available on the X model.

Maruti Celerio X (Cross) Launch Date

The manufacturer is yet to reveal its plans for launching this pseudo-crossover. However, speculations are rife that the Celerio Cross will launch before the end of this year. Some reports even go on to suggest that the launch date of this car will fall during this year’s festive season. It seems fairly possible that the new car will be out in the market before the end of this year’s festive period. The increase in demand for new cars during this time of the year should help the new Maruti car take off to a good start.

While the official price list will be out only at the time of the new car’s launch, we are pretty sure that the Celerio X will be roughly Rs 40,000 costlier than the current car. The new model will try to justify the increase in price through a more attractive exterior look along with more features for the interior. The entry-level variant of the new Celerio Cross could have a starting price of Rs 4.75 lakh. The fully-loaded trim could cost Rs 5.50 lakh.

Like we told you, the upcoming pseudo-crossover will be available with a petrol engine option only. It will be the same petrol engine that powers the current car. Yes, we are talking about the vary likeableย K10B 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine that produces a maximum power of 67 BHP along with a peak torque of 90 Nm. Maruti is currently offering a CNG variant as well. However, it doesn’t look like the Cross model would get this fuel option. The motor comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and a 5-speed AMT automatic as optional. Safely expect both the transmission choices to make it to the new car.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is one carmaker who truly understands the mileage-conscious car buyers. Currently, this B-segment hatchback offers a claimed mileage of 23.1 KMPL. Chances are that the company will re-tune the engine to offer slightly higher mileage for the X (Cross) version. Hence, we expect the upcoming Maruti to have a claimed average mileage of 24 KMPL.

The refreshed car will look both more modern and more rugged. The highlight of the exterior will be a plastic body cladding that will give the Celerio X a rugged look. Also, thanks to a higher ground clearance, the car will boast a bolder stance. Also new to the exterior will be a set of restyled bumpers with faux skid plates and new foglamps. The top-end model could even get stylish roof-rails and a rear spoiler. While there won’t be any major change in the design, the handful of minor updates will be sufficient to give the hatchback almost a new identity. Rounding off the updates will be the stylish dual-tone black-and-silver alloy wheels that will have a larger diameter. The new model will be available in new vibrant paint schemes.

Even the cabin won’t get a large number of changes. However, some minor changes do succeed in making the interior fresher. The dashboard and other plastic panels, for instance, will have a dual-tone black-and-grey look. Also, there will be upholstery change and the speedo cluster could be slightly updated. Other than this, the interior will remain much the same. The Celerio offers decent space for four occupants and the tallboy-ish architecture lends the cabin an airy feel. The top-end model will offer features like a Bluetooth-enabled audio system, multi-function steering wheel, and dual front airbags. Together with the new features that the Celerio Cross will offer, the upcoming model’s interior is likely to offer a highly likeable interior setup.
