In Conversation with MG Motor About Windsor EV

MG launched the Windsor EV with the industry-first BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) allowing for a considerably lower initial cost

The MG Windsor EV has become the highest-selling EV in the country in the month of October 2024. Note that it even overtook the mighty Tata Nexon EV on the sales charts. Windsor EV gained the attention of buyers due to its innovative BaaS package. It allows the owners to rent the battery and pay a monthly sum to MG depending on the usage. Hence, a huge chunk of the initial cost of an EV is lowered significantly since the battery is the single most expensive component in an electric car. Let us delve deep into the details of this case.

MG Windsor EV Becomes Highest-Selling EV in India

The JSW-owned MG Motor India announced via a press release that in the month of October 2024, it was able to sell a record 3,116 units of the new Windsor EV. That puts it at the top of the EV sales chart for October. Furthermore, this marks a remarkable 30% share of the overall Passenger Electric Car sales in this month. That is a testament to how well the customers have received it. In total, MG experienced a 31% growth (Y-o-Y) with a combined sales of 7,045 units from its entire range of electric cars. Finally, EVs have contributed 70% of the total sales of MG cars in India in October. This means that MG’s EVs are much more popular than its ICE cars.

The Windsor EV has an IP67-certified 38 kWh battery pack with LFP chemistry and Prismatic Cell Structure. The total power and torque output stand at a cool 136 PS and 200 Nm, respectively. With a claimed range of 332 km on a single charge, you can perform your daily chores effectively. Buyers might even have been attracted by the MG e-Shield Package which offers 3 years of unlimited warranty, 3 years of RSA and 3 years of Labour-free maintenance services. Charging from 0 to 80% with a 50 kW DC fast charger takes 55 minutes. The prices range from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 11.99 lakh without battery and Rs 13.50 lakh to Rs 15.50 lakh with battery. All prices are ex-showroom.

The fact that MG outsold the Tata Nexon EV in October represents that people liked the BaaS idea. That is understandable since they are able to save a ton of money by not paying for the entire battery pack upfront. Instead, they pay a monthly rent which depends on their usage. For the Windsor EV, this amount is set to Rs 3.5 per km. After the success of the disruptive model, MG even extended this approach to its other EVs including the Comet EV and ZS EV. In fact, there were reports about Tata Motors also planning to introduce this pricing model. Let us see how this BaaS strategy affects EV sales growth going forward.
