Mahindra will open bookings for the new-gen Thar on October 2 along with announcing the price of the SUV. You can even configure your own Thar exactly to your taste at Mahindra’s official website, before you book your SUV.
The launch of the new-gen Mahindra Thar is just round the corner, scheduled for October 2, 2020. This will be one of the most awaited car launches of the year and with Mahindra likely to get the pricing bang on, the new Thar will yet again be making headlines. Mahindra have now announced that they will be opening bookings for the Thar on the same day itself – Friday, October 2 – as the prices will be announced. Deliveries of the new Thar are expected to begin sometime in late October. You can even configure your own Thar exactly to your taste at Mahindra’s official website.
To give you a quick recap about the new Thar, it will be available in two series of variants- AX and LX. The AX series is the off-road focused variant whereas the LX series is the lifestyle focused variant. The AX off-road oriented series will be offered with the option of either a petrol or diesel engine, paired to a manual gearbox. Automatic gearbox on the AX series will however be offered only with the petrol variants. The LX series will be offered with a diesel engine with a manual and an automatic transmission.
The new Thar also debuts two new engines from Mahindra’s stable. Featuring a petrol engine for the first time, its a new 2.0-litre mStallion TGDI petrol engine that makes 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the diesel engine is a 2.2 litre mHawk unit that makes 130 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. Transmission choices include either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic gearbox for both the engines. Four-wheel-drive and a manual-shift transfer case are standard on all versions.
What’s still of core importance to the Mahindra Thar is its off-road ability and we are glad to report that it much improved on that front too. We have already tested the Mahindra Thar through a hardcore off-road course and it has come away with shining colors. The new Thar has much more water wading capacity, better approach and departure angles. It also gets new multi-link suspension at the rear and independent double wishbone front suspension which allows for better wheel articulation and suspension travel. What’s completely new on the second-gen Thar is a electronically controlled brake locking differential, which essentially acts as a traction control in low grip conditions, braking wheels which do not have grip and sending power to where its needed most.
But for the first time, the Mahindra Thar is more than just an off-roader and a regular SUV for that matter. It has gained a new petrol engine, an automatic transmission, a touchscreen infotainment system and a few more other essential goodies as well. It’s on-road dynamics are much improved than before and that is where you can really tell the differences. There are several reports already claiming that the base-spec Thar will be priced under Rs 10 lakh. If we go by these reports, the price of the Thar is expected to range between Rs 9.75 lakh – Rs 13.5 lakh. That’s an incredible price range for the Thar, for which you get hardcore off-road ability like no other and a very welcome on-road manners with the new-gen SUV as well.
