New KTM 390 Duke with Smaller 349cc Engine

The two-wheeler industry in India has been undergoing a transformation in the last few weeks

The new KTM 390 Duke has become more attractive for enthusiastic buyers. We know that KTM bikes hold a special place in the hearts of riding aficionados. This is true not just for India, but for buyers across the globe. Known for exciting performance regardless of the segment, KTM motorcycles have become synonymous with affordable riding pleasure. The 390 Duke has been an immensely successful product in this regard. However, with the current tax structure, the bike has become more accessible to a wider range of potential consumers. Here are the details.

New KTM 390 Duke Now Rs 1 Lakh Cheaper

To avail the benefits associated with lower taxes (18% instead of 40%) on bikes under 350cc, KTM has introduced the 390 Duke with a smaller 349cc engine. That has led to a sharp and significant reduction in the ex-showroom price. Furthermore, in some cities, the final amount has exceeded Rs 1 lakh when considering on-road costs. Therefore, this might be an ideal time to add the KTM bike to your garage. We have seen similar practices with other two-wheeler manufacturers as well. Downsizing the engines has resulted in a considerable decline in prices, with a marginal drop in power and torque figures.

Talking about the specifications, the KTM 390 Duke now gets a 349cc engine, which generates a healthy 41.5 bhp and 33.5 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. These are down from 45.3 bhp and 39 Nm, respectively. As one can see, the performance drop is not so massive, while the cost reduction is significant. Hence, it is a win-win situation for everyone. Note that the regular 390 Duke is also on sale at the same time. Remember, the regular model has a price tag of Rs 3.39 lakh, ex-showroom, whereas this new bike with the smaller engine retails for Rs 2.77 lakh, ex-showroom. It will be interesting to see the impact of this decision on the sales charts.

Having observed the Indian performance motorcycle market evolve over the years, I believe this move by KTM highlights how strongly taxation policies influence buying decisions in our country. What stands out to me is that manufacturers are now finding smarter ways to balance affordability with performance rather than simply chasing higher output figures. For most Indian buyers, a substantial reduction in ownership cost matters far more than a marginal drop in power. In my view, the more accessible KTM 390 Duke could further expand the brandโ€™s reach among young enthusiasts who aspire to own a premium performance motorcycle without stretching their budgets too much.
