E85 Petrol India Launch Fuel Station

Delhi Gets First E85 Fuel Station; Ethanol Fuel Costs Rs 82/Litre, Nearly Rs 20 Cheaper Than Petrol

A fuel that’s nearly Rs 20 cheaper than petrol is now available in Delhi. In a major step towards reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil, the national capital has received its first E85 fuel station. The development comes just days before Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is expected to push India’s ethanol mobility agenda further, making this one of the most significant fuel-related developments in recent years. For Indian motorists struggling with rising fuel bills, the headline figure immediately grabs attentionโ€”E85 is priced at approximately Rs 82 per litre, substantially lower than regular petrol in Delhi.

What Is E85 Fuel and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend containing 85% ethanol and 15% petrol.

Unlike conventional petrol, ethanol is produced from agricultural feedstock such as sugarcane, maize and other biomass sources. The government has been promoting ethanol blending for years as part of its strategy to reduce fuel imports and improve energy security.

The launch of Delhi’s first E85 fuel station signals that India is now moving beyond E20 and preparing for wider adoption of flex-fuel vehicles.

For consumers, the biggest attraction is obviousโ€”lower fuel prices.

For the country, the benefits extend much further.

  • Reduced crude oil imports
  • Lower foreign exchange outflow
  • Support for farmers
  • Reduced tailpipe emissions
  • Greater energy independence

Delhi’s First E85 Fuel Station: Location and Fuel Price

The newly inaugurated E85 dispensing station is located in Delhi and marks the beginning of what could become a nationwide rollout if consumer response remains positive.

Fuel Price Comparison

Fuel TypeApprox Price
E85 Ethanol FuelRs 82/Litre
Regular Petrol (Delhi)Around Rs 102/Litre
Price DifferenceNearly Rs 20/Litre

For a vehicle covering 1,500 km per month, the potential savings could be substantial over a year.

That said, there is an important catch.

Not every petrol-powered vehicle can run on E85 fuel.

Which Cars Can Use E85 Fuel in India?

This is where things get interesting.

Only flex-fuel compatible vehicles are designed to operate on E85. Standard petrol cars sold today are generally calibrated for lower ethanol blends and may not safely support E85 usage. The timing of this fuel station launch is noteworthy because Maruti Suzuki is expected to showcase its first E85-compatible production vehicle soon. Back at Auto Expo 2023, Maruti had already displayed a WagonR Flex Fuel prototype capable of operating on ethanol-rich fuel blends. Industry experts expect more manufacturers to enter the flex-fuel space over the next few years.

Why Is the Government Pushing Ethanol So Aggressively?

In my 15+ years of covering the Indian automotive industry, very few fuel initiatives have received as much backing from policymakers as ethanol. India imports a large portion of its crude oil requirements. Every spike in global oil prices directly impacts consumers and the country’s trade deficit. Ethanol offers an opportunity to partially reduce that dependence. According to government estimates, increased ethanol blending has already helped save billions of dollars in foreign exchange while creating additional income opportunities for farmers. The eventual goal appears to be creating a robust flex-fuel ecosystem where consumers have more affordable fuel choices.

Performance and Mileage: Is E85 Better Than Petrol?

This is one of the most searched questions surrounding ethanol fuel. The answer is slightly complicated. Ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol. This means vehicles running on E85 may experience a drop in fuel efficiency compared to regular petrol. However, ethanol also has a higher octane rating, which can allow engines specifically designed for E85 to extract performance benefits through optimized tuning.

For most consumers, the lower fuel price could offset the slight reduction in mileage.

What Happens Next?

The Delhi fuel station is unlikely to remain an isolated experiment. If flex-fuel vehicle adoption increases, more E85 dispensing stations are expected to appear across major cities.

Automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and several global manufacturers have already demonstrated flex-fuel technology in India. The missing piece has always been fuel availability. That barrier is now beginning to disappear.

Editor’s Note

The opening of Delhi’s first E85 fuel station may look like a small development today, but it has the potential to become a turning point for India’s automotive industry. The challenge isn’t the fuel itself. The challenge is creating enough flex-fuel vehicles for consumers to actually use it. Indian buyers are practical. They calculate running costs before making purchase decisions. If manufacturers can offer reliable flex-fuel cars without significantly increasing acquisition costs, E85 could become genuinely attractive.

At Rs 82 per litre, the economics are already compelling. The next few months will be crucial. If Maruti Suzuki launches an E85-ready production vehicle and fuel infrastructure expands beyond pilot locations, India could be entering a new chapter in affordable mobility. For now, Delhi’s first E85 fuel station is more than just another fuel pumpโ€”it is a glimpse into what the future of Indian motoring could look like.
