You would be taken aback when you get to know the real cost of a Toyota Fortuner. Fortuner is the most successful 7-seat off-roader in the country. It is an aspirational vehicle for a whole bunch of people. Its reliability, capabilities and ruggedness are some of the top reasons why people opt for it. However, the prices of the SUV, particularly in the last couple of years, have risen quite starkly. In fact, the top model of the Fortuner now costs over a whopping Rs 50 lakh, ex-showroom. It makes sense to investigate what taxes are you paying on the SUV. Here are the details.

Real Cost of Toyota Fortuner

This post comes from anvit_tyagi on Instagram. He categorically breaks down the cost structure of the Fortuner. To begin with, he says that the actual price of the SUV is around Rs 26 lakh. The government of India imposes a tax of 28% because the car is over 4 m in length and has an engine capacity of 2.8 litres. These attract the highest taxes in our country in the mass market segment. On top of that, there is an additional 22% cess. Furthermore, you also have to pay the road tax and green tax, taking the final price to around Rs 45 lakh. Hence, you are paying almost Rs 19 lakh on taxes alone.

Specs

The Toyota Fortuner offers two engine options – a 2.7-litre petrol engine and a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. These engines generate impressive power and torque figures, with the petrol engine producing 164 hp and 245 Nm, while the turbo-diesel engine delivers 201 hp and 420 Nm of torque (or 500 Nm when paired with an automatic transmission). You can choose between a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission for the diesel variants, and all-wheel drive capability is standard. The SUV also boasts a dedicated 4ร—4 system, ensuring it can effortlessly navigate various terrains. Pricing starts at Rs 32.59 lakh and goes up to Rs 50.34 lakh, ex-showroom.

What We Think

Toyota Fortuner continues to be the most successful product in its segment in our country. This is particularly true after the departure of its arch nemesis, Ford Endeavour, from our market. Today, we have tons of variants of the legendary SUV. But the appeal that people have for the Fortuner is quite insane. Nevertheless, it makes sense to know where your money is going. Especially if you are an automobile enthusiast, you must know how taxes work in the automobile industry. This is the exact reason why some vehicles cost less in international markets compared to India even if they are exported from India.
