EV Battery Charging at Home Catches Fire

In a rather horrifying case, an EV battery charging at home catches fire. The visuals are spine-chilling and showcase a man and his mother stuck in the fire at home. The cases of EV batteries catching fire have been on the rise for a while now. While there have been multiple cases of fire in two-wheelers on the roads, this one is particularly concerning since it happened inside the house of the EV owner. Many people charge EV batteries at home. That jeopardizes the health and safety of the people residing in that home. Let us take a look at the details here.

This post comes from VYAS KUSHWAHA on YouTube. It captures the shocking visuals of a violent fire inside a home. The man who records the video shows the EV battery being charged in one corner of the house. Suddenly, smoke and flames start emerging from the battery. In a matter of seconds, the entire battery is engulfed in flames. He is evidently and understandably in a panic mode and is calling out to her mom who is in the other room. The house is getting filled with smoke and toxic fumes emerging out of the battery. The video ends abruptly and we are not able to know the exact outcome of this. We can only hope that people were safe.

Normally, the battery is tightly sealed and engineered to stay intact even in adverse situations. However, if an EV battery catches fire, conventional firefighting methods often prove ineffective. The reason is simple – the components of the EV battery act as fuel themselves, resulting in a phenomenon called Thermal Runaway. This happens when the electrolyte breaks down, releasing not only oxygen but also other hazardous gases like carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrofluoric acid, and cobalt. In such cases, pouring water or using fire extinguishers is futile.

Author’s Note

We would like to advise our readers to never charge EV batteries at home. Many Western countries already follow this protocol of not bringing the EV battery inside the home. That is a great practice to follow. Lithium-ion batteries are vulnerable to temperature and if it gets too hot due to any reason, the chances of it catching fire are high. Once such batteries burn, you need special techniques to take the fire out. Simply sprinkling water is not enough. Let us hope that people never perform such activities at home for their safety, as well as the safety of everyone around.
