The Tata Altroz Turbo will be powered by the 1.2L three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine from the Nexon with 110PS of power and 140Nm of torque. According to the leaked document, prices will range from Rs 7.99-8.75 lakh.
Tata’s first product in the premium hatchback segment – the Altroz – is an extremely well rounded package that surely deserves more attention that it is getting. With stunning looks, great features and space, superb ride and handling balance and of course, a five-star safety rating, the Altroz is one of the most compelling products in its segment. There’s also a new turbo-petrol engine coming on the Altroz and that should really put things in favor for the Altroz. Now a leaked document on the internet has revealed the price and engine specifications of the upcoming Tata Altroz Turbo.
Tata has been working on the turbo-petrol variant of the Altroz for quite some time now. We have seen spy images of Altroz turbo on our roads and it was also showcased at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. The Tata Altroz Turbo will use the 1.2L, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine from the Nexon, but here it has been tuned to produce 110PS of power, as compared to 120PS on the Nexon. The document also reveals that the Altroz Turbo will have 140Nm of peak torque, again detuned from the Nexon’s 170Nm torque output.
There are also reports which claim that the Altroz turbo will use a DCT gearbox instead of the Nexon’s 6-speed AMT. There has however been no mention of the DCT gearbox in this leaked document here. It means that the Altroz turbo will be launched only with the 5-speed manual gearbox, at least initially. But a DCT gearbox is also most likely in the pipeline, which the carmaker has been working on, but it’s too soon to confirm that.
We had also reported to you that Tata Motors will offer the turbo-petrol engine only on the higher specs of the Altroz. The Tata Altroz Turbo will come in four variants – XT, XT (O), XZ and XZ (O). Although the recently leaked document does not reveal the exact name of the variants, it confirms that it will come in four variants. It does however reveal the prices and below is how it stacks up against the rest of Altroz range. It’s also interesting to note that Tata will introduce a new XT(O) variant with the Altroz Turbo as its not offered on the standard petrol and diesel versions of the Altroz.
|Altroz NA Petrol||Altroz Turbo Petrol (Expected)||Altroz Diesel|
|XT||Rs 6.99 lakh||Rs 7.99 lakh||Rs 8.19 lakh|
|XT (O)||—–||Rs 8.19 lakh||—–|
|XZ||Rs 7.59 lakh||Rs 8.59 lakh||Rs 8.79 lakh|
|XZ (O)||Rs 7.75 lakh||Rs 8.75 lakh||Rs 8.95 lakh|

With this new turbo-petrol engine, the Tata Altroz will be the most powerful hatchback in its segment, alongside the Volkswagen Polo 1.0L TSI. Both these cars produce an identical 110PS of power, but the Polo GT TSI still remains the most torque-ey of the lot. For your reference, the Polo 1.0L TSi produces 175Nm of torque. Hyundai too will be launching the next-gen i20 with the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine but it remains to be seen the exact state of tune in which they offer the engine on the i20. Tata Motors could launch the turbocharged Altroz variants by around Diwali this year.
