Amidst rapidly rising cases of car thefts in Canada, the Toronto Police advises people to leave their car keys at the front door in a Faraday pouch. This pouch restricts the electromagnetic waves from the key fob to prevent the miscreants from manipulating electric signals to unlock cars. It also eliminates the perils associated with thieves copying the key fob entirely. In recent times, the cases of violent break-ins to get the car keys in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have seen a massive surge. Here are the details.

Amidst all this, Constable Marco Ricciardi advised, “To prevent the possibility of being attacked in your home, leave your fobs at the front door because they are breaking into your home to steal your car; they don’t want anything else. A lot of them that they’re arresting have guns on them, and they are not toy guns. They are real guns, they’re loaded.” This is a clear warning sign from the Police department suggesting how severe the situation has become. Needless to say, this didn’t sit well with the netizens. One user commented, “Toronto Police advise the public to leave your fobs near the door… Why not hang your keys outside the door? Or better yet, just leave them in the car.” Another one said, “This is failed state-level insanity… Hey guys, do you mind making it easier for people to steal your cars so that they won’t break into your house instead? Thanks!”

Author’s Note
This is understandably a concerning issue. Such a sharp rise in auto theft cases in Canada would evidently make the residents uncomfortable. It is the responsibility of the authorities to prevent crime and safeguard the citizens. That is what most internet users are suggesting. They demand more intense patrolling in high-risk areas. Sure, the car owners will need to be vigilant and have safety equipment in place like security cameras. But ultimately, the Police have to make sure that the miscreants are caught and put behind bars for their actions.
