VW Taigun Facelift Spotted Testing

The mid-size SUV segment is among the most crowded spaces in the Indian automobile market

The updated iteration of the VW Taigun has commenced testing on the Indian roads. Note that it belongs to the highly competitive mid-size SUV category in India. Almost all major car marques offer some products in this space. In recent years, this segment has demonstrated exponential growth. Led by the Koreans, people have really taken a liking to every vehicle in this class. The Taigun has been a crucial product for the German auto giant. Having done a decent job on the sales charts for the last few years, the facelift is already around the corner.

The internet is buzzing with spy images of the heavily camouflaged mid-size SUV. Interestingly, the visuals showcase the front and rear ends wrapped in a thick covering to conceal the design. However, the side sections are clearly visible. They reveal relatively unchanged side door panels in comparison to the existing model. There are characteristic sharp creases, black side pillars, sturdy roof rails and prominent wheel arches with presumably a new design for the alloy wheels.

Apart from that, the tail end contains a regular antenna, which means that this might not be the top variant. Additionally, we see the roof-mounted spoiler at the back, along with sleek taillamps with a sporty bumper. As we know, facelifts generally don’t offer extremely different design elements in comparison to the outgoing models. As a consequence, there will be minor updates to the front fascia and rear profiles to distinguish it from the pre-facelift model. More details will emerge closer to the launch.

Now, I don’t suppose there will be any changes to the powertrain and transmission alternatives with the facelift. This means that it will most likely continue with the 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol mill, which generates 115 PS and 178 Nm, and a larger 1.5-litre TSI EVO turbo petrol engine, good for 150 PS and 250 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. These mills can be paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. For the 1.5-litre version, the automatic transmission is the 7-speed DSG, while it is a torque converter with the smaller engine. At present, the prices range from Rs 11.80 lakh to Rs 19.83 lakh, ex-showroom. The updated model could bear a slight premium over these.
