Yamaha MT-15 has been launched in India, for a price of Rs 1.36 Lakhs (ex-showroom). It goes against Duke 125 and Apache RTR 200 4V.

Yamaha MT-15 has debuted the Indian market, finally. It is a naked streetfighter, inspired by the global MT series. MT-15 is based on the popular R15 V3, borrowing its engine, suspension and chassis.

The bookings for the bike already began 2 weeks prior to the launch. Display units and test ride units have started reaching dealerships. The deliveries will commence by the end of this month.

Last year, Yamaha stated that it will soon shift its focus from the mass produced commuter motorcycles to lifestyle ones. Yamaha’s lifestyle motorcycle range starts from FZ and Fazer.

MT-15 is the first model from its new ‘Call of the Blue’ program. Many other premium motorcycles will be launched in India soon after this.

Yamaha MT-15 Launch Date

Yamaha MT-15 Price

Price (ex-showroom)Rs 1.36 Lakhs

Since it is a naked street version of the R15, they both share the same chassis and engine specs. MT-15 goes for a price of Rs 1.36 Lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).

The price difference MT-15 and R15 V3 is a mere Rs 3000. The fully faired version is priced at Rs 1.39 Lakhs up to Rs 1.41 Lakhs.

Yamaha MT-15 Design

Based on the looks, we can truly say that it belongs to the MT family. The bigger capacity motorcycle like MT-09 display the same aggressive nature with a muscular bodywork.

Although, the Indian-spec MT-15 looks a bit different than the Thai-spec. The alloy wheels and chassis are borrowed from the R15. The front portion of the bike looks somewhat similar to the FZ25.

The India-spec MT-15 misses out on gold anodized USD Forks, Spiral Alloy wheels and possibly the bug-shaped LED headlamps.

The spy shots suggest that MT-15 with its dominating naked street fighter looks, stand out in the crowd. Especially, the aggressive design will attract more attention to it.

Yamaha MT-15 Engine Specifications

Engine155cc liquid-cooled VVA
Power19.3 BHP
Torque14.8 Nm
Transmission6-speed

MT-15 gets the same engine that comes in R15 V3. It uses the 155cc liquid cooled SOHC engine with VVA (Variable Valve Actuation). The engine produces 19.3 BHP and 14.8 Nm of peak torque. It will come mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

The VVA system helps in generation of torque at lower as well as mid-range, distinctively working towards offering better mileage figures. We expected it to get a BS-6 compliant engine, which might be launched later this year.

Yamaha MT-15 Mileage Expectations

Fuel Tank Capacity10 Litres
Mileage (claimed)50 kmpl
Riding Range (as per claimed mileage)500 kms
Top-Speed 131 km/hr

MT-15 gets a fuel tank capacity of 10 Litres. With the help of VVA, R15 V3’s engine delivered a wwhopping50 kmpl on our road test.

With MT-15, similar mileage figure of 50 kmpl is expected. The total riding range should be somewhere around 500 kms. The top speed achievable on this bike is 119 km/hr, which is nearly 12 km/hr slower than R15.

Yamaha MT-15 Features

The feature list of MT-15 is similar to that of Yamaha R15 V3. Following are the features that come onboard:

  1. Fully Digital Instrument Cluster
  2. Single-channel ABS

  4. LED tail light
  5. Slip and Assist Clutch
  6. Single Step up Seat

Yamaha MT-15 Suspension and Braking

Front SuspensionTelescopic Forks
Rear SuspensionRear Mono Shock
BrakesFront and Rear Disc with Single-ABS

Unlike the Thai-spec, the India-spec MT-15 uses conventional telescopic forks and a rear mono shock absorber.

For braking purposes, it gets front and rear disc brakes with single-channel ABS as standard fitment. We hope that just like the R15 V3, MT-15 also gets dual-ABS soon.

Ground Clearance155mm
Wheelbase1335mm

Seat Height810mm

MT-15 is 1965mm long, 800mm wide and 1065mm tall. It gets a respectable ground clearance of 155mm and a long wheelbase of 1335mm. The seat height of the bike is 810mm, which is considered a bit high.

Fortunately, it weighs considerably lower at 133 kgs. The dimensions hint that it will be nimble to handle and quick on the toes.

Yamaha MT-15 Competition

MT-15 debuts as a naked performance motorcycle. In it price range, there are very few motorcycles. Most of them are more powerful than the MT-15.

Its square-one rival will be KTM Duke 125. KTM recently launched the baby Duke and priced it at Rs 1.18 Lakhs. It is also a performance-oriented naked bike. However, the power figures are lower than MT-15. Duke 125 has an advantage over the fact that despite being the baby, it still sounds like every other KTM.

Other rivals in the competition include Bajaj Pulsar NS200 and TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. Both the bikes offer better power figures at a relatively lower price. Its just that a similar pricing puts them in a competition.

The power figures of both the motorcycles are higher than MT-15. The engine capacity is bigger, which offers refinement at higher speeds.
