The legendary Yamaha RX100 could return to India in an all-new avatar.

Chairman Chihana has said the launch of the new Yamaha RX100 could be possible after 2026 and that it would require a new engine

Yamaha RX100, one of the most iconic motorcycles to have ever sold in India, has a chance of returning to India, albeit, in an all-new avatar. Yamaha RX100 could return in 2026

“We want to bring back the RX100 brand but there are two points — RX100 is two-stroke engine and complying BS6 engine in it is impossible now. But, certainly giving the name to a new model is in our plan. Having said that, once we put the RX100 on a brand/some aspiring model … the reincarnation with modern styling/ flavour, is a big challenge,” Eishin Chihana, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India, told BusinessLine.

On being asked about a possible launch date, Chihana commented that it could happen only after 2026. This is because the company currently plans to launch other models till 2026. “We have a plan, but we should not use RX100 name so easily … it will ruin the image. RX100 cannot be a quick plan/decision … it should be an impactful package with powerful engine and design.”

“From the global point of view, Yamaha in India is expected to become the second biggest export hub, next to Indonesia. Currently, Indonesia exports to 55-60 countries. We want to increase the destinations, whether in the US, Europe or Japan, from the Indian hub,” Chihana added. Currently, Yamaha Motor India, exports around 3 lakh two-wheelers an annum, which is less than 50% of the exports from Yamaha Indonesia.

The Yamaha RX100 was launched in India back in 1985 and stayed in production until 1996. The motorcycle enjoyed a cult status and it is still in demand in the used market. Many continue to maintain the motorcycle in immaculate condition, which goes on to reflect the great desirability of the 2-stroke pocket rocket.
