Maruti 800

Our dealership sources suggest that Maruti 800 will be relaunched in India by 2021. It will replace the Alto 800, which towards the end of its cycle.

Maruti 800 was discontinued in India in 2014, which marked the end of an era. Introduced back in 1983, it was every middle-class family’s dream. Over its stint in India of 31 years, 800 was many families’ first car and also was liked by celebrities.

It was mainly discontinued in India due to the growing competition and the stringent safety norms. The tiny but peppy hatchback was used in many races and was said to be the toughest of all. Low on maintenance, great mileage and literally, any roadside mechanic could repair it.

Our dealership sources suggest that Maruti is going to bring back the 800 by next year. In an earlier report, we said that Maruti is going to phase out Celerio and Alto 800 by next year. Both of them are towards the end of their life cycle in our country.

Maruti bringing back the 800 will garner attraction and also revive the brand name. It would use the same engine that comes on Alto 800 but with a completely different shape. We are eager to know if Maruti will keep its boxy silhouette alive.

Under the hood, it will run on the 796cc three-cylinder petrol engine. The motor, currently, produces 40 BHP and 60 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 5-speed MT. Definitely, the 1.0 Litre three-cylinder engine would not be used onboard.

Maruti might fill it up with many features like the SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system, four power windows, optional fog lamps, steering mounted audio controls and much more. Rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD and driver airbag will come as standard.
