New 2020 Tata Tigor

New reports suggest that Tata is developing a new sub-4 metre sedan. So does that mean the end of the road for the Tigor?

Tata was one of the earliest entrants in the sub-4-metre sedan with the Indigo CS. Indigo was a huge success in that time. Followed by that, Tata launched the Zest and now, the Tigor. Compared to Indigo, both these sedans have not performed that well.

Now, reports come in suggesting that Tata Tigor might actually be replaced by a completely new sedan. Chances are that it could get a new name or be a new generation Tigor. Tata is said to be in the development process now and will take 1-2 years to come in production.

The biggest change on board will be the platform. The new Tata sedan will be built on the brand’s ALFA platform. Altroz is based on this platform and so will be Tata’s upcoming executive sedan and the HBX micro-SUV.

Tata says that the ALFA platform can be used for different styles like hatchbacks, sedan, SUVs and MPVs. The platform is also flexible to adjust different types of powertrain like petrol, diesel, electric motor and even hybrid.

Seeing Tata advancing swiftly in the EV space, it could launch a new ICE-powered sub-4-metre sedan with this platform along with an EV. This could be similar to the case of Nexon and Nexon EV. The report says that the sedan is internally codenamed as “Goshaq”.

Also, Tigor is towards the end of its lifecycle in India. Since 2017, the sedan has received no major upgrade but just a couple of facelifts. In that case, Tiago has received major facelifts that have changed the styling of the hatch to some extent.

A new generation Tata sedan with all the bells and whistles and the high safety rating could be a volume generator in this segment. Right now, Maruti Dzire is the segment leader followed by Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura/Xcent, Ford Aspire and then Tata Tigor.
