With buyers now preferring safer cars in the market, a number of car makers are focusing on the safety standards of their offerings. Global NCAP is also working hard on bringing comprehensive safety crash test ratings for the new cars and recenlty announced updated crash test cars. Having said this, here is a list of the top 5 safest diesel SUVs in India as per NCAP safety ratings.

Top 5 Safest Diesel SUVs as per NCAP

1. MAHINDRA SCORPIO N

The Scorpio N is one of the few cars to score 5 stars in the Global NCAP crash tests and scored 29.25 out of 48 points in child occupant protection. It’s even the only ladder-on-frame SUV of India to have scored a full 5-star rating. Also, it’s among the very few vehicles to have scored this well in the more stringent tests rolled out recently. The company offers 2 engines in which the first is a 2.0-L Mstallion turbo petrol engine that generates 200 PS of power and 380 Nm of peak torque while the second engine happens to be the 2.2L mhawk engine that generates 175 PS of power and around 400 Nm of peak torque. The SUV is priced from Rs 11.99 Lakh (ex-showroom).

2. SKODA KUSHAQ/VW TAIGUN

The other SUVs to have recently scored full 5-stars in NCAP are the Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun. Even the twins were tested as per the stricter norms. These SUV got 29.64/34 in adult protection and 42/49 in child protection. This not just makes the Kushaq and the Taigun the first models to get 5-star rating as per the more demanding tests, but also among the safest cars of the country.

3. MAHINDRA XUV700

The XUV700 has also been awarded a 5-star rating in Global NCAP. The SUV scored 16.03 out of 17 in the adult occupant protection category and 41.66 out of 49 in the child occupant protection category. It is offered with 2 engine options for the buyers. The 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine generates 197 PS and 380 Nm peak torque and the 2.2L turbocharged diesel engine on the other hand generates 155 PS and 360 Nm peak torque. It is priced from Rs 13.45 Lakh (ex-showroom).

4. MAHINDRA XUV300

Mahindra XUV300 is one of the safest Indian cars on sale and is one of the strongest rivals to other sub-compact SUVs in the market. The sub-compact SUV won Global NCAP’s first Safe Choice Award, scoring 16.42 out of a possible 17 in the adult occupant protection category and 37.44 out of 49 in the child occupant protection category. It gets 2 engine options, one of which is 1.2L turbo petrol generating 130 PS peak torque and 1.5L TurboDSL generating 117 PS torque. Its starting price is Rs 8.41 Lakh (Ex-showroom).

5. TATA NEXON

Tata Nexon has also achieved a 5-star rating in GNCAP and scored 16.06 out of 17 points in adult occupant protection. It also achieved a 3-star rating in child occupant protection. It gets two engine options – 1.2L Petrol and 1.5L diesel engine. The 1.2L turbo petrol engine generates 110 PS with 170 Nm while the 1.5L diesel engine generates 110 PS with 260 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines can be had with manual as well as automatic gearbox options.
