Brazil is one of the fastest emerging markets and this is evident from the series of spy shots of various cars that have emerged over the internet in the past couple of months. One of the latest examples is the Mahindra Quanto which was spied along with other Mahindra products such as the XUV500, Scorpio and Scorpio pick-up.

Now we have a couple of interesting images of the upcoming small car from Volkswagen, the Volkswagen Up Low Cost version. NoticiasAutomotivas, a fellow automobile blog which had spied the Quanto, managed to get some pictures of the five door version of Volkswagen Up while it was being tested in the company of Volkswagen Gol.

The Up has been spotted a couple of times in India as well, but this particular variant being tested in Brazil is a little more interesting. Why? Well because it seems to be a low cost variant of the Up. Some of the noticeable changes made to the exterior includes a split assembly rear windows, with a wind down capable section. This very version of Up uses butterfly glass on the rear doors.

The test mule features an imitation of the actual tail lamps used on the global model. While the exterior features are visible in these images, there is no picture of the passenger cabin but we do expect some trimming there as well.

Interestingly these images surfaced shortly after the news that Volkswagen is planning for a cheaper sub-brand to compete with Nissan’s Datsun and Renault’s Dacia brands.

The Brazilian Up will be powered by a 1.0 litre petrol engine that will be compatible with the flex fuel (petrol + ethanol). The Indian version will equip the same engine but will run on petrol only. A 1.2 litre 3 cylinder engine will also be there and is expected to be the volumes puller in India.

Undoubtedly this Volkswagen Up low cost, the stripped down version of European UP is going to give a tough competition to other entry level small cars and we are eagerly waiting for it to arrive in India. We will keep you posted on the the updates, stay tuned to Car Blog India.
