New Maruti Swift vs Fronx vs Baleno vs Ignis Mileage Comparison

New Maruti Swift vs Fronx vs Baleno vs Ignis Mileage Comparison

The next-gen Maruti Swift will finally launch on May 9. Ahead of the official debut, many details of the new hatchback have come up online. Recently, I even got to have a look at the ARAI mileage figure. As with every new generation, the Swift pushes the envelope when it comes to the fuel efficiency. Today, in this post, I have compared the FE with other small Marutis positioned close to the Swift. Let’s take a look –

New Generation Maruti Swift Mileage

As per the leaked data, the all-new Swift will have a claimed mileage of 25.72 km/l. This is the ARAI-spec figure for the manual variant. A quick look at the ARAI figures of the current model is all that took to make me realize the focus the carmaker is laying on the fuel efficiency bit. The current Swift offers an impressive 22.38 km/l for the manual version. Its AMT version delivers 22.56 km/l in same test conditions. If I compare these with the leaked data, it’s clear that the fuel efficiency will be a trump card for the new Swift. We’re not sure what the automatic would deliver. Globally, the new hatchback gets hybrid and CVT options. For now, I am not sure if any of these will make it to us. What I can tell you, though, is that the current K12 mill will make way for the Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. Power and torque will be down to 82PS-112Nm from 90PS-113Nm of the current car.

Mileage Comparison with Other Maruti Suzuki Hatchbacks

Maruti Suzuki has been the undisputed leader of fuel efficiency since time immemorial. In fact, its cars are synonymous with class-leading mileage. And that’s exactly the case with the new-gen Swift. However, it’s not just the swift that delivers a stellar fuel efficiency. Other Maruti hatchbacks that will be positioned close to the new small car already boast impressive mileage figures. Keeping that in mind, let me take you through the details of the Baleno, Fronx and Ignis.

Maruti Baleno Mileage & Specs

In its second generation, the Maruti Baleno is positioned slightly above the Swift. Also, it is sold through the more premium, Nexa outlets. However, it shares aplenty with the current Swift. Both the vehicles are built on the HEARTECT platform and have pretty much the same mechanicals. As of now, the Baleno is available in petrol and CNG versions. It even offers manual and AMT options. The K12 engine offers 90 PS and 113 Nm. The manual version offers 22.35 km/l, while the AMT delivers 22.94 km/l. I am not focussing on the CNG variant here as the Swift will be a petrol-only model, at least initially.

Maruti Fronx Mileage & Specs

Perched between the Baleno and the Brezza is the crossover version of the former. Dubbed Fronx, this vehicle might not have a huge price overlap with the new Swift. Still, though, the comparison is a bit obvious owing to the parts-sharing with the current Swift. So, like the outgoing. version, even the Baleno-based crossover gets the same K-Series 1.2-litre engine. It even gets the same transmission options – 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT. The former offers 21.79 km/l, while the AMT offers 22.89 km/l. And then, we have the Boosterjet turbo option, which produces 100 PS and 147.6 Nm. The motor offers 21.5 km/l with the manual transmission and 20.01 km/l with the 6-speed DCT automatic. Maruti Fronx Mileage and Specs

Maruti Ignis Mileage & Specs

Finally, let me bring to focus the Maruti Ignis. Like the current Swift, the Ignis is based on the HEARTECT platform and employs an older version of the 1.2-litre K-Series engine. It even offers the same transmission options – a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. In all likelihood, the new-gen Swift will cost a lot more than the Ignis, which is nearing the end of its lifecycle. Still, given the close positioning, let me highlight the fuel efficiency and specs of this cross-hatch. The Ignis delivers 83 PS and 113 Nm. This is same as what even the current Swift offered until its engine got the Dual-jet, Dual-VVT treatment. Its both transmission variants offer an ARAI-rated mileage of 20.89 km/l. This makes the Ignis far less fuel-efficient than the upcoming small car.

Clearly, the new-gen Swift holds a huge advantage over its siblings when it comes to the fuel efficiency. Not just this, it’s even bound to become the most fuel-efficient car in the segment. The high fuel efficiency will definitely pull crowds in this era of ever-rising fuel prices. However, I feel a lot will also depend on the pricing. In a price-sensitive market like ours, the sticker price goes on to play an equally important role. Moreover, with the increased focus on safety, it will be important for Maruti to ensure the new Swift fares will in NCAP. Now, this is where it already seems to have made good progress. With 6 airbags being standard, the new Swift will likely be a lot safer than the outgoing version. All in all, it’s clear that the hatchback has won the fuel-efficiency wars. Let’s now see how it fares on aspects of pricing and safety. Stay tuned for more updates on the new Swift.
