Two of the biggest names in the Indian car industry, two new crossovers – In the past couple of weeks, we have witnessed two highly anticipated launches- the Maruti S-Cross and the Hyundai Creta. Both crossovers are targeted at the premium end of the small SUV space and will compete with established (and more conventional) competition such as the Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and even the Mahindra Scorpio. The cost sensitive nature of our car market means the pricing of these two new entrants will play a vital role in determining their success in the country. Falling in the 8-14 lac price bracket, both cars have divided opinions over their pricing. So how do these two crossovers stack up against each other in terms of their respective asking prices? Find out here in our Maruti S-Cross vs Hyundai Creta Price Wars comparison.

We’ll start off with the full price list of the two crossovers first;

Hyundai Creta Maruti S-Cross
  1.6 L Petrol 1.4 L Diesel 1.6 L Diesel   1.3 L Diesel 1.6 L Diesel
Base INR 8.59 lacs INR 9.46 lacs – Sigma INR 8.34 lacs –
S INR 9.57 lacs INR 10.42 lacs – Delta INR 9.15 lacs INR 11.99 lacs
S+ – INR 11.45 lacs – Zeta INR 9.99 lacs INR 12.99 lacs
SX – – INR 11.59 lacs Alpha INR 10.75 lacs INR 13.74 lacs
SX+ INR 11.19 lacs – INR 12.67 lacs
SX(O) – – INR 13.60 lacs
SX+ AT – – INR 13.57 lacs

all prices ex-showroom, New Delhi

One look at the price list and you will notice this is not a close and shut case of one car being better pricier than the other. There are a few talking points regarding the cost of these two SUVs.

Firstly, the 1.3 litre DDiS 200 version of the Maruti S-Cross is very well priced. The base Sigma trim is cheaper than the base 1.6 L petrol trim of the Creta. In fact, even the 1.3 litre Diesel variant of the S-Cross is, feature-for-feature, cheaper than the petrol Creta. Kudos to Maruti for that. Even when we compare the 1.3 L S-Cross and the 1.4 L Creta diesel, the former is cheaper by almost a lakh rupees! This gives the S-Cross a significant advantage over the Creta, especially since the power output is identical and the Maruti is much more fuel efficient and better equipped than the Hyundai. Overall, there is no doubt that the Maruti S-Cross DDiS 200 is much better than the Hyundai Creta 1.6 L petrol and 1.4 L diesel in terms of pricing.

Coming to the range topping 1.6 L diesel versions of these crossovers, the case is the exact opposite of what we just discussed in the paragraph above. Owing to the fact that the 1.6 litre diesel unit found under the hood of the S-Cross is fully imported pushes the prices up. As a result, the DDiS 320 version of the S-Cross costs more than the 1.6 L diesel version of the Hyundai Creta. The fully loaded SX(O) trim of the Creta is cheaper than the top spec Alpha trim of the S-Cross by around 14,000. This may not be a huge amount, but taking into account the greater SUV appeal of the Creta, this would work against the S-Cross. The automatic diesel variant of the Hyundai is also cheaper than the Maruti ensuring that the Creta is simply much better value for money than the S-Cross.

The Hyundai Creta, clearly, has more mass market appeal as compared to the Maruti S-Cross. One way of countering this was pricing the S-Cross below the Creta to give an advantage over the latter. While Maruti has done that very well with the 1.3 litre DDiS 200 diesel, the same cannot be said for the 1.6 litre DDiS 320 diesel. The demand for the Hyundai Creta is such that waiting periods of certain variants already extend up to 8 months! The S-Cross DDiS 200, on the other hand, is well priced and last we checked, doesn’t command a huge waiting period. However, all thanks to a high sticker price of the S-Cross DDiS 320, the more powerful engine variant might not end up having too many takers. Come to think of it, the top-end models of these cars rub shoulders with even the Mahindra XUV500 when it comes to pricing.

Verdict

The Maruti S-Cross is genuinely a very good crossover and the DDiS 200 version, in particular, is very well priced. But if you are looking for a more powerful diesel then we would pick the Hyundai Creta 1.6 over the Maruti S-Cross DDiS 320 as we feel it offers much better value for money.
