Maruti will soon introduce CNG as an alternative fuel to the diesel engines. The 1.3-litre will be discontinued and to fill that space, cars running with this engine capacity will be given a CNG alternative.

With the introduction of BS6 emission norms in April 2020, most of the car manufacturers are ditching the oil burner from their portfolio. That said, the homegrown carmaker, Maruti Suzuki has also confirmed that it will discontinue the diesel engine post new emission norms.

And if Maruti pulls their plug from their diesel vehicles, they sure have to come up with an alternative fuel option, say CNG, for cars like Swift, Dzire and more. Mind you, the diesel cars combine to a total of 23% of shares in Maruti Suzuki sales.

Mr C V Raman, MSI, Senior Executive Director (Engineering) told PTI that for Maruti Suzuki in the future, CNG vehicles are likely to make up for the space vacated by small diesel engine cars. He added that Maruti believes that for a small car, CNG is a very good option.

In addition, he also talked about the wide range of CNG cars present in Maruti Portfolio ranging from Eeco, Celerio, WagonR, Alto 800 and Ertiga. We are here to provide green fuel and Indian government focus is also to expand the gas-based economy.

If the CNG comes onboard with the Maruti Swift, it will be shared with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. This motor produces 83 bhp along with 114 Nm of peak torque. However, we can expect a 10% drop in power if the Swift comes with CNG as an alternative fuel. The transmission will stick to 5-speed automatic only.

Similarly is the case with the Maruti Dzire. It comes in petrol and diesel engine and post BS6 it will be available in the sole petrol engine. Talking about its competition, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Aspire, both of which come with a CNG option. Power figures will be slightly decreased but then mileage on CNG equipped cars is increased and knowing it is considered as a key factory in India, most people are expected to switch to cleaner fuels.
