  • Yezdi brand was up for liquidation back in 1996 and the assets of the company were vested with the Official Liquidator.
  • As a result, the Yezdi motorcycles were discontinued back then.
  • But they were re-launched in our market in 2022.

The Karnataka High Court has bad news for all the Yezdi brand fans. Yezdi is a popular and iconic name in the Indian two-wheeler industry for decades now. There was a significant gap in motorcycle production since 1996 due to a liquidation process when the Ideal Jawa India Co. Pvt. Ltd. went defunct. However, that gap was filled in January this year (2022) when Classic Legends Private Limited launched the Yezdi range of motorcycles in the Indian market. But the High Court has restrained anyone from using the Yezdi brand name. In fact, the company has been given 30 days to stop using the Yezdi branding. Here are the details.

Real estate developer Boman Irani is the co-founder of Classic Legends Private Limited which is a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra. Because the latest Yezdi motorcycles are sold under this company, the Karnataka High Court has fined Boman Irani and Classic Legends Rs 10 lakh each questioning their conduct in the matter. As per the liquidation process, the brand name, trademark, and assets are with the Official Liquidator and can’t be used by Boman Irani, Classic Legends or any other entity in any way, shape or form. The assets sold under the liquidation process will fund the pending dues to the Ideal Jawa Employees Association.

In a statement released by Classic Legends Private Limited, it was said, “The order is held in abeyance and the company is seeking legal advice on the matter. The company will be filing an appeal against the order shortly and is optimistic of securing favourable relief. In the interim, manufacturing and sale of motorcycles will continue, subject to orders of the Appellate Court.”

Currently, the Yezdi bikes are sold through common dealerships in Jawa and Yezdi. There are three models of Yezdi on sale at the moment – Roadster, Scrambler and Adventure. People have bought these in high numbers. They provide a rugged tourer bike vibe which is the reason why most young people are attracted to it. Let us wait to see how this whole situation pans out in times to come. Do share your thoughts on the matter as well.
