Ford has launched the newest iteration of the Figo hatchback replacing the original model which, although successful, had lost out to competition in recent times. Speaking of which, the new Figo competes with some formidable rivals in the form of the Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10, Honda Brio and Tata Bolt. We reviewed the new Ford Figo, both in the petrol and diesel guise, and we loved the car. However, we still need to figure how this latest offering from the American automobile giant Ford stacks up against the competition. Which is exactly what we will do in our Ford Figo vs Maruti Swift vs Hyundai Grand i10 vs Honda Brio vs Tata Bolt spec sheet comparo.

Design

Let’s talk a little bit about the design first. The Ford Figo is identical to its sedan sibling up until the B-pillar with changes in design occurring around the C-pillarย region. Which means it gets the same striking looking nose with the bold grille and neat wraparound headlamps. As most hatchback to sedan boot-jobs go, the hatchback is much better in appearanceย from the back, which is also the case with every other car in this comparison. We love the Maruti Swift’s sporty styling with its large swept back headlamps and tail lamps. Hyundai has done well with the styling of the Grand i10, but the wheels are a tad bit small which give the car a very bulky look when viewed from the side. The Honda Brio is perhaps the standout design here with its all glass rear hatch and quirky looks, but while we like the way it looks, some might find it quirky and unattractive. The biggest problem with the Bolt’s styling is that it still bears a significant resemblance to the Tata Indica Vista which might put off some buyers. However, we feel Tata has done enough to give it pretty attractive front end.

As far as the interiors are concerned, the Figo benefits from Ford’s striking centre console design which makes it one of the best places to be in. That said, the Maruti Swift and Tata Bolt also get a neat, well-designed dashboard with very good levels of quality and fit and finish. It is the Honda Brio that loses out when it comes to interiors design and quality thanks to the quirky layout and unimpressive fit and finish. Space is Tata’s forte and Bolt is easily the most spacious of the lot. Rear seat space in the Maruti Swift is a bit disappointing.

Features

None of the hatchbacks in this comparison will disappoint as far as the features list is concerned. An integrated 2 DIN audio system with USB and Bluetooth telephony support, air conditioning, dual front airbags and ABS are common features. However, the there is a feature or two which set these cars apart from each other. The Grand i10 is the only car that offers rear AC vents and leather-wrapped steering and gear knob. The Brio and Bolt feature a touchscreen infotainment system which the others miss out on. The Tata Bolt raises the bar slightly with fancy features like projector units and follow me home headlamps. The Ford Figo does not get a touchscreen, but it does come with a long list of features such as an automatic climate control, 6 airbags, Ford MyDock, Ford MyKey, Ford SYNC and many more.

The Ford Figo shares its power units with the sedan sibling. Which means it also gets the 1.5 petrol with the 6-speed dual clutch autobox. The Honda Brio is the only car in this comparison that does not get a diesel engine option which puts it on the backfoot. The Ford Figo is easily the most powerful and the most fuel efficient of the lot. The Swift and the Bolt are the only hatchbacks that do without the option of an automatic gearbox.

Price

Aggressive pricing by Ford means the Figo starts at around the INR 4.3 lacs mark going all the way up till INR 7.41 lacs for the diesel top end. This makes the Figo a good value for money proposition and placing it just above the Brio and below the rest of the hatchbacks. Currently, the Brio is the cheapest of the lot while the rest are similarly priced.

Verdict

Ford has already managed to impress us with the styling of the Figo and being a Ford ensures the hatchback is a feature laden offering with well sorted driving dynamics, probably the best in class. However, it is the pricing that swings things in favour of the Figo hatchback. The Maruti Swift is the current king among these hatchbacks followed closely by the Hyundai Grand i10. The Honda Brio is marked down due to the lack of a diesel engine option and the Tata Bolt loses out thanks to the Tata brand name andย its the resemblance to the Indica Vista.

[box type=”success” ]The Ford Figo has the potential to be the best in its segment, but it will not be easy to beat the Maruti Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10 to the top spot.ย [/box]
