Hyundai to Install Nearly 600 Fast Public EV Chargers Across India

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) plans to install around 600 public fast-charging stations nationwide over the next seven years. Out of these, it targets installation of 50 stations by December 2024. In a statement, Mr. Jae Wan Ryu, Function Head – Corporate Planning at HMIL, highlighted that despite the rapid growth anticipated in the EV market by 2030, many customers hesitate to take their EVs on long highway journeys due to limited charging options. To address this, Hyundai is focusing on building charging infrastructure along key highways and in major cities, leveraging its global expertise in EV and battery technology to lay the groundwork for a robust EV ecosystem in India. 

Charging Milestones and Future Plans  

To date, Hyundai’s charging network has supported approximately 50,000 sessions, delivering over 730,000 units of energy to more than 10,000 EV customers, including non-Hyundai vehicles. Additionally, HMIL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to establish 100 EV charging stations across the state by 2027, with 10 of these set to be operational by the end of 2024. Currently, three stations are up and running in Spencer Plaza and BSR Mall in Chennai, and at Hotel Seasons in Tiruvannamalai. Tamil Nadu EV users can locate and access these stations 24/7 through the *myHyundai app.  

The myHyundai app offers EV users access to over 10,000 charging points across India. This has been done in collaborations with partners like ChargeZone, Statiq, Shell India, and others. Hyundai’s public charging stations are designed to accommodate all four-wheel EVs manufactured in India. The chargers are conveniently located at spots like shopping malls, coffee shops, and restaurants to make EV charging a part of regular activities.

Strategic Placement of Key Stations  

To strengthen its nationwide presence, Hyundai has strategically positioned its charging stations in major cities such as Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. Additionally, the company has established a solid network on high-traffic highways including Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Jaipur, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Surat, Hyderabad-Vijayawada, Bengaluru-Pune, and Pune-Kolhapur.  

Hyundai’s fast-charging stations are equipped with state-of-the-art chargers that offer multiple configurations, such as:  

• DC 150 kW + DC 60 kW + DC 30 kW  
• DC 150 kW + DC 30 kW 
• DC 60 kW  

Hyundai Motor India has sold over 4,061 units sold as of November 2024. The carmaker’s electric lineup includes Hyundai IONIQ 5 and *Hyundai Kona. Moreover, it looks all set to add the Creta Electric to its EV lineup next month. The focus on building inclusive infrastructure should help with faster adoption of the electric cars.
