Mahindra has shelved the 2.5 Litre diesel engine from the Bolero, and the SUV now comes with only 1 diesel engine, the more powerful 1.5 Litre unit.

The upcoming BS-6 norms are taking a toll on all automakers, as they have to discontinue many of their vehicles, or their engines and think about if they have a future in the budget-centric Indian market.

The latest one to face the axe is the torquey old 2.5 Litre diesel engine on the Mahindra Bolero. The engine produced 63 BHP and 195 Nm of peak torque and came mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

This engine variant was not updated to the new safety norms, which has confirmed the discontinuation. Recently Mahindra launched the safety-feature updated Bolero Power+, which gets a smaller but more powerful engine.

Bolero Power+ uses a 1.5 Litre mHawk 4-cylinder engine, that produces 71 BHP and 195 Nm of peak torque. This engine will be updated to the BS-6 norms and we expect Mahindra to start rolling out its compliant models by early next year.

Power+ variant comes with ABS, driver-side airbag, speed alert system, front passengers seatbelt reminder, reverse parking sensors with standard fitment. That’s pretty much the safety features list of the SUV.

Also, the new engine has already been cleared for BS-6 certification. The main difference between the Bolero and Bolero Power+ is the dimensions and the smaller diesel engine, which makes it a sub-4 metre SUV.

Other features on the Mahindra Bolero Power+ include music system with Bluetooth and AUX connectivity, digital instrument console, all power windows, rear armrest, charging slot, rear washer and wipe, voice alert system and the micro-hybrid system.

Because of the upcoming BS-6 norms, Mahindra will discontinue the Xylo MPV and the small 1.2 Litre diesel engine on the KUV100. Rest all the models will get the updated BS-6 engines, from early next year.
