The Maruti Gypsy has been in production for almost 33 years now. It is being phased out in lieu of the new strict emission and safety norms.

In an official communication to its dealers, Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automobile manufacturer has conveyed that it has now stopped the production of the Gypsy 4×4. The iconic off-roader from the Indo-Japanese automaker has been in production since the last 33 years. Dealers are told not to accept any new bookings for the same.

The Maruti Gypsy is facing the axe due to the approaching deadline for stricter emission and safety regulations. With low sales due to an outdated design and a lacklustre cabin in this day and age of touchscreen and automatic climate control, it does not make a sense to upgrade this product to meet the new regulations. With only a petrol derivative on offer, the Gypsy has remained a niche product and does not justify a large investment required for upgradation.

For the time it was on sale, the Maruti Gypsy has become a true icon in our country. It is, even today, one of the most capable off-roaders in India. Until recently, it was serving the Indian armed forces in multiple capacities. Not only this, but the Gypsy’s go-anywhere capabilities have seen this car taking part in some of the most gruelling rallies. For all the time that this SUV was on sale in India, it has created such a huge fanbase which are definitely going to miss this vehicle.
