Jimny has been among the most popular lightweight off-roaders in many parts of the world for decades now
In this post, I discuss about a virtual rendition of the Maruti Jimny EV, along with the possibility of it making to the production line in the coming years. Jimny is an iconic product in the Japanese car marque’s international lineup. In India, it is available in a more practical 5-door iteration. That is something the Indian buyers truly appreciate. The lightweight SUV boasts off-roading amenities and prowess, without compromising on the family-friendly aspect. However, the future belongs to electrification and it looks like the Jimny will experience it too.
Maruti Jimny EV Imagined Digitally
These digital conceptualizations are based on the test mule of the Jimny EV spotted a few days ago at an international location. The heavily camouflaged EV embodied the familiar boxy silhouette, an upright stance, sporty bumper, fog lamps, sleek LED headlamps, pronounced wheel arches, etc. Similarly, the digital artist has gone into specific details to come up with this rendering, too. At the front, we witness the three stripes for the LED DRLs integrated inside the headlamp cluster, compact fog lamps, an upright bonnet and a Suzuki logo at the centre.
On the sides, the electric SUV gets creaseless body panels, square windows, massive wheel arches, tough alloy wheels finished in black paint, large ORVMs and functional roof rails to highlight its utilitarian elements. Unfortunately, we are not able to glance at its rear profile. Nevertheless, we can safely assume it to carry the spare wheel on the boot lid, along with a flat side-opening door and sporty bumper. Overall, the EV will carry the strengths of the legendary Jimny in addition to the new electric powertrain. Whether or not it will retain its off-roading charm and capabilities remains to be seen. We might see the electric Jimny in the flesh by the end of this decade.

Having observed market trends closely, I believe an electric Maruti Jimny is an interesting idea but not an easy one to execute in India. The Jimnyโs core appeal lies in its lightweight construction and hardcore off-road capability, which are not easy to replicate with current EV technology. At the same time, with stricter emission norms and a gradual shift towards electrification, such a move seems inevitable in the long run. In my view, if Maruti can retain the Jimnyโs rugged character while adapting it to an electric platform, it could open up an entirely new niche in our market.
