MG Comet vs Tata Tiago EV Comparison

MG Comet vs Tata Tiago EV Comparison.

For the month of July 2024, the MG Comet EV is a whopping Rs 1.25 lakh cheaper than the Tata Tiago EV. Both these are among the most affordable electric cars one could buy in India. Hence, these are direct rivals despite being fundamentally different. In July, there are Rs 25,000 (Rs 10,000 consumer offer + Rs 15,000 exchange bonus) worth of discounts on the Comet EV which takes its effective price to Rs 6.74 lakh, ex-showroom. On the other hand, the Tiago EV has a retail sticker of Rs 7.99 lakh, ex-showroom. Hence, it could be an exciting time to choose between the two. Hence, let us check out which one is a better prospective.

Advantages of MG Comet EV Over Tata Tiago EV

  1. The MG Comet EV is inherently more affordable than the Tata Tiago EV. A difference of over Rs 1 lakh in a huge deal for a vehicle that costs less than Rs 7 lakh. Hence, buyers could find it hard to resist such a significant offer. Even the top variant costs Rs 9.53 lakh, ex-showroom before any discounts. Therefore, the affordability factor is certainly in the favour of the Comet EV.
  2. The Comet EV also offers a distinct and quirky design which is refreshing. This is particularly liked by the younger buyers. Since this is a bespoke EV, the space is maximized inside the cabin as there is no space for the engine at the front. Apart from that, MG offers tons of customization options which is something people appreciate. In this day and age, buyers want their vehicles to be unique and stand out from the rest. Hence, Comet is the better option in that regard.
  3. The compact design of the MG Comet EV ensures that it is more suitable for city environments and usage. On account of being mega-compact, the EV is easy to manoeuvre around the tight spaces on city roads and parking lots. That is the biggest advantage of the Comet which comes in handy in everyday scenarios.
  4. Finally, the Comet EV owners mention that they consistently get closer to the claimed range. That is not common for most EVs since a lot depends on atmospheric temperature and driving mannerisms. Still, to have a constant range offers peace of mind.

Advantages of Tata Tiago EV Over MG Comet EV

  1. On the other hand, even the Tata Tiago EV offers some key advantages to the buyers over the MG Comet EV. For starters, the Tiago EV is made from its ICE counterpart. Hence, it is more conventional in terms of design and dimensions. As a result, its cabin is the more practical of the two.
  2. Tata Tiago, in its regular form, boasts an impressive 4-star safety rating at the Global NCAP. Granted, it was as per the old protocols. Still, it is the safest vehicle in its segment. The new Global NCAP rules are not widely different from the old procedure. Hence, we can expect it to still be a pretty safe vehicle.
  3. Finally, the Tiago EV has better driving characteristics and ride quality. In fact, that is something which is true for all Tata cars. Therefore, you will enjoy driving the Tiago more than the Comet.

Our View

In essence, both these offer distinct advantages over the other. Hence, if you are on a strict budget, going for the MG Comet EV is a no-brainer. It is the cheapest mass-market electric car in the country. However, if you don’t want to experiment with a relatively newer brand and want the security associated with the Tiago moniker, the Tiago EV is the one for you. In any case, you can analyse the two EVs on the aforementioned parameters based on your requirements and make the final call.
