The next generation Mahindra Thar is going to offer better ride comforts, stability at high-speeds but could lose a little bit of its off-road capability.
The next generation Mahindra Thar is going to launch in India sometime during the year 2020. The homegrown automaker has already commenced testing this vehicle on Indian roads. Going by the numerous spy shots, it is quite evident that the new Thar is going to be significantly bigger than the outgoing model. It is in fact based on an all-new platform the use of which will help the off-roader meet the upcoming crash test regulations.
A recent report published in Autocar India states that with this generation update, the Thar is going to n all-new 2.0-litre diesel engine. It will replace the exiting 2.2-litre unit which is good for 105 BHP along with 247 Nm of peak torque. The power figures of the new unit will stand close to 140 BHP along with a torque output of around 300 Nm.
Is this turns out to be true, then the Mahindra Thar is going to get even with its arch competitor in India, the Force Gurkha Extreme which comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine that is good for 140 BHP along with 321 NM of peak torque.
Next-generation Mahindra Thar will offer better ride quality in comparison to the outgoing model. In addition to this, the increased power output should help this 4×4 to perform well on highways. The suspension will be tuned in such a way so as to provide better on-the-road use. Maybe Mahindra is planning to project the Thar as more of a lifestyle vehicle than a proper off-roader for its next-generation update.
The next-generation Mahindra Thar will be based on the automaker’s Gen3 chassis. This is the same chassis which underpins the Mahindra Scorpio and the TUV300. This platform, in comparison to the one on which the current iteration of the Thar is based upon, will offer 10 percent less wheel articulations.
