Renault Duster 1.0 Techno vs 1.3 Iconic+ Comparison

Renault Duster 1.0 Techno vs 1.3 Iconic compared. Check engine specs, features, safety, expected price in India and which variant offers better value.

After years of speculation, Renault’s iconic SUV returns with a modern design, turbocharged engines, premium features and multiple variants aimed at different buyers. Among the available variants, the Techno and Iconic trims attract the maximum attention. One is positioned as the value-packed mid-spec variant. The other promises the full Duster experience with all the bells and whistles. Similarly, the 1.0 TCi option ensures easy accessibility, while the 1.3 TCi offers segment-best performance and a sharp DCT. The big question is simple: which one offers better value for money? We break down everything the Renault Duster 1.0 Techno and Renault Duster 1.3 Iconic are expected to offer.

Renault Duster Design Comparison: Techno vs Iconic

The good news is that both variants retain the rugged character that made the Duster such a success in India. The new-generation model gets a much more muscular stance, squared wheel arches, Y-shaped LED lighting elements and a significantly more premium appearance than the outgoing model. However, the top-end trim gets additional goodies.

Renault Duster Interior Features: What Extra Does Iconic Get?

The cabin is where the gap between these two variants widens significantly. The Techno variant already comes loaded with most of the essentials expected from a modern midsize SUV. But, the Iconic trim pushes the premium quotient much higher.

For many Indian buyers, bits like the bigger digital cluster and electric seats easily justify the jump to the top-spec variant. That feature has become almost mandatory in this segment thanks to rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Grand Vitara.

Renault Duster Engine and Performance Comparison

This is arguably the biggest differentiator between these variants. The Techno variant is powered by Renault’s 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, while the Iconic gets the more powerful 1.3-litre turbocharged unit.

TorqueApprox 160 Nm280 Nm
Transmission6-speed Manual 6-speed Manual/DCT

In real-world driving conditions, the 1.3-litre turbo engine feels significantly stronger. Highway overtakes will require less effort, while performance enthusiasts are likely to appreciate the additional power reserves. The 1.0-litre engine, meanwhile, should be more than adequate for everyday city usage.

Renault Duster Safety Features: Techno vs Iconic

Safety is one of the strongest areas for the new Duster, which has even bagged a reassuring 5-star rating at Bharat NCAP. Both variants benefit from 6 airabgs, ABS with EBD, ESC, HSA, TPMS and Blind Sport Monitoring as standard fitment.s

The Iconic offers Level-2 ADAS technology, while this suite is not available on the Techno trim. This, alone, serves as a major differentiator.

Renault Duster 1.0 Techno vs 1.3 Iconic Price in India

Pricing will ultimately determine the selection of a huge set of buyers. Clearly, the 1.3 Iconic offers several niceties over the 1.0 Techno, but those confined by the budget might be allured by the VFM quotient of the lower version. .

Ex-showroom Price Comparison

VariantEx-showroom Price
Duster 1.0 TechnoRs 13.49 Lakh
Duster 1.3 IconicRs 16.99-18.69 Lakh

At these price points, the Techno variant competes directly with lower-to-mid trims of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Maruti Suzuki Victoris. The Iconic will move into territory occupied by premium variants of these SUVs and even mid-level trims of larger three-row models.

Renault Duster Rivals in India

The new Duster enters one of India’s most competitive segments.

Key rivals include:

  • Hyundai Creta
  • Kia Seltos
  • Maruti Grand Vitara
  • Maruti Suzuki Victoris
  • Toyota Hyryder
  • Honda Elevate
  • Skoda Kushaq
  • Volkswagen Taigun

Renault’s challenge will be differentiating the Duster through its rugged SUV credentials and turbocharged performance.

Editor’s Note

In my experience, the Techno variant is likely to emerge as the sweet spot in the lineup. It offers the rugged styling, modern cabin, touchscreen infotainment system, dual panoramic sunroof, assurance of a 5-star NCAP rating and essential safety features most buyers actually need. The 1.0-litre turbo engine is should also keep acquisition costs and ownership expenses in check.

The Iconic is for a very different audience. If you want the more powerful engine, bigger wheels, ambient lights, ADAS suite, premium cabin materials and stronger highway performance, the top-spec variant will undoubtedly be appealing. The problem is pricing. Once the Duster crosses the Rs 18 lakh mark, buyers begin comparing it with larger and more feature-rich alternatives. For value-conscious Indian buyers, the Techno could end up being the variant to beat. For enthusiasts who have been waiting for a genuinely powerful turbo-petrol SUV with great dynamics and a mature ride that’s generally the characteristic of European offerings, the Iconic may finally bring back the excitement that made the original Duster such a cult favourite.

One thing is certain: Renault’s comeback SUV looks far more competitive than many expected.
