A Tata Sumo in Bhopal has been customized to look like a Mercedes G Wagon.

Even though the Tata Sumo has long been discontinued, it provides a clean canvas for car customizers to work their magic on

The Tata Sumo was launched way back in 1994 and was on sale until 2019. It was never the preferred choice of those looking for an upmarket family car but the UV had a dedicated set of followers owing to its ruggedness, reliability and affordability. Today, there arenโ€™t many examples of this utilitarian vehicle around. However, its clean design has often impressed car customizers. The case in the point here is this Mercedes G-Wagon replica thatโ€™s based on a rickety old Tata Sumo.

Tata Sumo-based Mercedes G Wagon Replica

This Mercedes G Wagon replica is a common sight on the roads of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The video above shows the owner describing his rather unique Tata Sumo in great detail. In order to achieve the G Class look, the original panels of the MUV were remoulded. If you look at the front, the bonnet, the fenders, the headlamps and the indicators atop the fenders closely resemble the once on the iconic German SUV. But, frankly, the side profile and the rear are still decidedly Sumo-ish. The customizer has definitely nailed it with the front-end but rest of the mod-job leaves more to be desired.

Even the bare-basic interior of the Tata Sumo has been redone to achieve a more premium ambiance. That said, once inside, one would be hard pressed to find any resemblance with the G Wagon. The grey cabin of the Sumo has been redone in a while theme. The seats have received art-leather upholstery. Even the original roof liner has been replaced with a more premium version in the same white colour scheme. Additionally, this Sumo gets two front-facing captain seats instead of the bench in the middle row.

Additionally, the front doors have been given power windows but the rear doors continue to have manual windows. This Mercedes G Wagon-replica even gets some additional features like a sunroof, Android touchscreen infotainment unit, starry light pattern, leather-wrapped steering wheel and USB charger.

Not Road Legal

As per the owner, the engine of the Tata Sumo has not been given any sort of performance upgrades. Instead, the old diesel mill has been refurbished using genuine parts. While we totally appreciate the efforts made by the owner to give his ageing UV a new lease of life, it must be noted that such modifications are not road legal. Hence, we would discourage one from making such extensive modifications to his or her vehicle.
