Tata has launched the Altroz premium hatchback, with prices starting at Rs 5.29 Lakhs (ex-showroom). The bookings for Altroz are ongoing, for a token of Rs 25,000. Further, the deliveries are also expected to commence by early next month.

The premium hatchback goes against the likes of Toyota Glanza, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz. Here, we have put the Tata Altroz Vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno, as the latter is the best-selling in the segment.

The prices of Altroz start off at Rs 5.29 Lakhs up to Rs 7.69 Lakh. In comparison to the Baleno Petrol, the Altroz comes in cheaper. The top-end variant of Altroz is cheaper than that of Baleno, by nearly Rs 1.2 Lakhs. However, the Baleno diesel comes in cheaper, with its top-end variant costing around 60,000 less.

Both the hatchbacks get BS-6 compliant petrol engines. Altroz uses a 1.2 Litre three-cylinder engine that produces 86 BHP and 113 Nm of torque. Baleno gets a 1.2 Litre four-cylinder engine with Smart-Hybrid technology, producing 88 BHP and 113 Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard on both, while the Baleno additionally gets a CVT as well. Altroz is also going to get an automatic gearbox soon, likely a 7-speed DCT unit.

The diesel engine of Altroz is BS-6 compliant, whereas the diesel unit of Baleno is BS-4. Post-April 2020, the Baleno would only be available with a petrol engine. The Altroz gets a 1.5 Litre unit, producing 90 BHP. The Baleno gets the infamous 1.3 Litre Fiat-sourced unit, delivering 75 BHP. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard on both of them.
