Mahindra and Mahindra has done it again by putting on a great looking vehicle on stage and attracting a lot of appreciation on the same. The 2012 New Mahindra Xylo 2012 is a much better looking MPV with new top of the line E9 variant and premium features like cruise control, voice recognition etc. In this article in continuation to the Car Comparison Series on Car Blog India, we will do a detailed comparison of the new Mahindra Xylo 2012 with the new model 2012 Toyota Innova facelift Diesel model.

New Mahindra Xylo 2012 Exteriors Vs New Toyota Innova 2012 Exteriors

Mahindra Xylo 2012 Vs Toyota Innova 2012

Mahindra Xylo 2012 Dimensions

  • Length = 4520 mm
  • Width = 1850 mm
  • Height = 1895 mm
  • Wheelbase = 2760 mm
  • Ground Clearance = 186 mm

Toyota Innova 2012 Dimensions

  • Length = 4585 mm
  • Width = 1760 mm
  • Height = 1760 mm
  • Wheelbase = 2750 mm
  • Ground Clearance = 176 mm

In terms of looks, both the MPVs have a nice appearance with Innova having a more contemporary curves and Xylo is more of a sporty contours. The sporty blackened pillars, nudge guards, roof rails, rear spoilers etc. look more sporty and action packed. So my vote for looks goes with Xylo.

New Mahindra Xylo 2012 Interiors Vs New Toyota Innova 2012 Interiors

Luxurious Space and comfort

Premium Walnut brown interiors

Interiors of the New Xylo 2012 are premium looking and the quality of plastics, upholstery and the overall feel is very pleasing and comfortable. However the colour tone is slightly darker than the Innova, but it still feels good, spacious and comfortable on the inside.

Toyota Innova 2012 New Model Seat Configurations

The new Toyota Innova 2012 interiors are also very premium and sophisticated, the plastic quality is good, but the space inside the cabin is slightly lower so its not as spacious as the Xylo 2012. So the interiors seems to be slightly better for the Xylo 2012 in terms of features as well as the space.

New Mahindra Xylo 2012 Diesel Engine Vs New Toyota Innova 2012 Diesel Engine

Mahindra Xylo mEagle Engine Specifications:

  • 2.5 Litre CRDI Diesel engine
  • Peak power of 112 BHP @ 3800 RPM
  • Peak Torque of 260 Nm
  • ARAI Mileage of 13 KMPL

Mahindra Xylo mHawk Diesel Engine Specifications:

  • 2.2 Litre CRDI Diesel engine
  • Turbocharged Diesel engine
  • Peak power of 120 BHP @ 4000 RPM
  • Peak Torque of 290 Nm
  • ARAI Mileage of 14.02 KMPL
  • Kerb Weight about 1830 Kg
  • Power to weight ratio of 65 BHP per 1000 Kg

Mahindra Xylo MDI Diesel Engine Specifications:

  • 2.5 Litre CRDI Diesel engine
  • Peak power of 95 BHP
  • Peak torque of 220 Nm

Toyota Innova 2012 Diesel Engine Specifications

  • 2.5 Litre CRDI Diesel engine
  • Peak power of 105 BHP @ 3600 RPM
  • Peak Torque of 200 Nm
  • ARAI Mileage of 12.99 KMPL
  • Kerb Weight of about 1670 Kg
  • Power to weight ratio of 63 BHP per 1000 Kg

When looking at the pure power and torque numbers, Xylo does stand out with better power and torque figures, but if we consider the kerb weight of these two cars, the power to weight ratio of these cars is quite close. The Xylo still leads in terms of power, torque as well as fuel mileage as per the ARAI figures of the mHawk engine version.

New Mahindra Xylo 2012 Handling and Performance Vs New Toyota Innova 2012 Diesel Handling and Performance

In terms of ride and handling, the Xylo is slightly on the rough side, but with the improvements in the rear suspension and more stability added to it, we expect the handling has got better in the new version. We will bring more details on this after a road test soon.

Innova on the other hand is very well known for good ride quality and sharp and easy handling besides being a large MPV. This is one department where Innova is a clear winner.

The Xylo starts are Rs. 7.37 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 10.25 Lakhs ex-showroom with fully loaded top end version with features like cruise control, leather upholstery, Voice commands flat bed seats etc. which the Innova lacks, however, Innova does have some features like full touch screen dual din audio system with DVD display, reverse parking camera (Xylo has sensors) etc. which Xylo lacks. But as as overall package, the new Xylo is a much more attractive value for money package at prices as lower as Rs. 3 Lakhs when comparing the top end Xylo E9 with Innova VX Diesel.

Car Blog India verdict – New Mahindra Xylo 2012 Diesel Vs New Toyota Innova 2012 Diesel

If you want a better value for money and spacious car and can manage with not-so-perfect ride and handling , Xylo is the MPV to go for, however if ride and handling is your primary criterion, and you don’t mind spending a lot more premium for it, Innova will please you better. If I were to choose, I would probably go with Xylo for its higher value for money package with overall sport appeal and performance.
