Mahindra XUV 500 to get a major generation update in 2020!

The next-generation iteration of the Mahindra XUV 500 will use a monocoque chassis with a new platform which will also spawn a Ford SUV of similar size.

The Mahindra XUV 500 has been with us for a really long time. Since its inception back in 2011, this mid-size SUV from the homegrown automaker has received no major update but still continues to stand as one of the major crowd pullers for the brand in India. In the wake of new product launches in the same segment, the competition for this Cheetah inspired urban utility vehicle has increased multiple folds. And hence it is about time that Mahindra gives us a generation update for this SUV.

2018 Mahindra Xuv500 Facelift

According to a recent report published in Autocar India, Mahindra and Mahindra seems to have commenced working on a generation update for the XUV 500. And that it is expected that they are going to launch it in India sometime during the year 2020. What essentially is going to be the second generation update for this SUV, will continue to come with its signature monocoque chassis.

However, the brand is going to employ an all-new platform. The development of this new product will be done by Mahindra by taking inputs from its technical centre based in America as well as from Pininfarina, the Italian design house which it now owns.

The next-generation Mahindra XUV 500, curtsey its new platform, is going to get a considerable increase in its dimensions. This will result in increasing space on the inside and hence, better comfort for third-row occupants.

The new Mahindra XUV 500 will ditch the current 2.2-litre diesel engine for an all-new 2.0-litre, BS-VI complaint oil-burner. It is to be believed that this engine will be capable to churn own an impressive 180 BHP of power, a considerable increase of around 25 BHP from what the current model offers. Transmission options will include, just like now, a manual as well as a torque converter automatic gearbox.

All that said, it will not be a smooth sailing for the new Mahindra XUV 500 when it makes its debut in India. In addition to the current breed, it will have to face competition from several new products which are set to launch in India soon. These will include the next-generation Hyundai Creta which is going to be a 7-seater, Kia all-new SP concept based SUV and the new MG SUV as well as Tata Harrier.
