The first car from the Hyundai N-division in India will be the Hyundai i20 N-line which will be powered by a 1.0L T-GDI petrol engine mated to a 6-speed MT/7-speed DCT as standard.

According to latest media reports, Hyundai has finally confirmed that they would be launching their ‘N’ performance line of cars in India. This confirmation came from Albert Biermann, President and Head of R&D, Hyundai Motor Group. Even Hyundai India’s head, SS Kim, has said that the first N car would be launched in the country in a matter of three years from now, i.e, by 2022.

In a recent interview, Albert Biermann said, “We are studying the feasibility of bringing the N lineup to India. We see some demand and customer growth in India, they are very aspirational and quite young and progressive.”

Hyundai’s N-Division cars actually come in two states of tune. There’s the ‘N-Line’ of cars which are regular road cars with some fancy body kit and some minor bump in performance. And then there’s the full fledged ‘N’ cars from Hyundai which are proper hot hatches with some serious performance under their hood.

Currently, Hyundai has only one full-fledged ‘N’ car in their lineup and that is the Hyundai i30 N which is available in hatchback and fastback body styles. Hyundai even showcased the i30 N at the 2018 Auto Expo but that then was only for the purpose of display. However, Hyundai is also developing the i20 N which was even spotted testing at the Nurburgring some time ago. The i20 N will be powered by a 1.6L T-GDI engine but will only be available in its next generation guise.

Hyundai also has the more practical and more economical N-line of cars which include the i30 N-line and even the Tuscon N-line which debuted at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. These N-line cars are meant to appeal to a wider range of customers and are pocket-friendly too.

When Hyundai N-Division finally launches in India, it will be the ‘N-Line’ cars which will be launched first and then the full-blown ‘N’ cars may follow. The first car to be launched under the ‘N’ brand will be next-generation i20 N-line which is expected to debut by mid-2020. The i20 N-line will likely be powered by a 1.0L T-GDI petrol engine mated to a 6-speed MT/7-speed DCT as standard.
