The BMW 8-series Gran Coupe joins the family of 8-series coupe and convertible. It will also use the same powertrain options that we have seen in the 8-series family.
The BMW 8-series family is now finally complete with the launch of the new 8-series Gran Coupe. This new four-door 8-series model will be first showcased at the Frankfurt Motorshow before it goes on sale in the international market by September. The BMW 8-series Gran Coupe replaces the now discontinued 6-series Gran Coupe.
The BMW 8-series Gran Coupe joins the family of 8-series coupe and convertible. It will have a range of six-cylinder and V8 engine options including the new 523hp M850i xDrive Gran Coupรฉ. It will see competition from a growing segment of performance luxury vehicles which includes the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS, as well as the Porsche Panamera.
The most obvious differentiation for the 8-series grand Coupe are of course those extra pair of doors. With that, comes an increase in length and wheelbase of the car. The 8-series is bigger in every way though. It now stands at 5,082mm long, 1,932mm wide and 1,407mm tall, which makes it 239mm longer, 30mm wider and 66mm taller that its coupe sibling. The wheelbase thus has increased by 201mm than the 8-series coupe and it now stands at 3,023mm. That allows for two frameless doors at the rear and an interior space that’s at par with the 6-series Gran Coupe.
The same engine options from the 8-series coupe will continue with its bigger sibling. The base 840i Gran Coupe will get a turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol unit which churns out 340hp and 500Nm of torque. It can be had in rear- or four-wheel drive. 0-100kph times for each of configurations are 5.2sec and 4.9sec respectively.

There will also be a 840d Gran Coupe with a 3.0-litre, diesel in-line-six engine making 320hp and 680Nm of torque. The 0-100kph sprint comes up in a mere 5.1sec. And then, at the top of the 8-series Gran Coupe is the glorious M850i xDrive, with a 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 which develops 530hp and weighs just shy of two tons at 1,995 kg. 0-100 kph time for this monster comes in just 3.9 seconds.
All engines will be mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 840i and M850i xDrive will come with an M Sport rear differential. Rear-wheel steering is standard on the four-wheel-drive variants and optional on rear-wheel-drive ones.

There’s still something more coming up. Later this year, BMW M division will be launching the crown jewel of the 8-series range – M8 and M8 Competition variants of the new four-door, featuring a twin-turbo 4.4-litre petrol V8 with outputs of 600hp for the M8 and 625hp for the M8 Competition.
