Maruti Suzuki India Limited is currently working on the next generation Alto for India. Earlier this year, we brought you spy shots of the Japan-spec Alto that was spotted testing in India. It was then speculated that it might be launched here. However, the 2016 Alto will not be entirely based on the JDM car and will, instead, borrow heavily from it. In what comes in as very positive development, a source in Japan has informed us that the New Maruti Alto 2017 will meet all safety standard set by Bharat NCAP. Maruti cars have repeatedly come under fire for their questionable crash-worthiness. This new info means that the new Alto can mark the debut of safe, low cost cars from the manufacturer. Read on for more on the New Maruti Alto 2017 launch, price, safety and more details.

New Maruti Alto 2017 – Safety
As we mentioned earlier, safety will be key aspect for future Maruti products and based on information from a reliable source in Japan, the new Alto will pass all Bharat NCAP tests which are expected to come into effect in 2017. The car is currently undergoing testing in Japan and is likely to begin trials in India soon. Aside from that, Maruti is also expected to offer airbags and ABS as an option.
Maruti has had its cars’ crashworthiness questioned time and again, with the most recent example being when the Swift (pictured above) failed the global NCAP crash tests. It is good to see the manufacturer paying attention to the safety standards even on low cost products such as the Alto.
New Maruti Alto 2017 – Specifications
Powering the JDM Alto is a 660 cc motor. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual or an optional CVT. The India-spec version is likely to continue with the current 796 cc unit along with a 5-speed manual. An optional AMT could be on the cards as well. Like the current Alto, the new one will also get a more powerful K10 variant with a bigger 1.0 L engine. An interesting addition to the line-up could be a diesel variant. Powering the Diesel model will be Celerio diesel’s DDiS 125 engine.
New Maruti Alto 2017 Design & Features
The Japanese-spec Alto pictured here boasts of a very retro exterior with some very interesting bits. However, this design is unlikely to go down well with the general Indian public. So expect the Indian version to be visibly different. However, the India-spec Alto could borrow heavily from this one, both in terms of design and construction. Dropped out of the list will be bits like the bumper mounted combination lamps, vertical slats in the grille area, etc. The squarish dashboard will give way to a more rounded design. The new design will be better suited to Indian tastes.
