Tata H2X (Hornbill) to be Showcased at 2020 Auto Expo; Launch Later in the Year!

Tata H2X or the Hornbill as its internally known will be showcased in production-spec at the 2020 Auto expo with launch scheduled sometime later in the year.

Tata Motors have confirmed the production version of the Tata H2X concept will follow the launches of the Altroz and the Buzzard. Internally known as the Tata Hornbill, the production-spec H2X sub-compact SUV is expected to be launched towards the end of 2020. However, me might get to see this upcoming SUV from Tata in real much ahead at the 2020 Auto Expo in February.

Before that however, Tata has two more important launches up its sleeves. First on the cards is the Tata Altroz premium hatchback which is scheduled to be launched in September this year. That will be followed by the Tata Buzzard which is essentially a seven-seater version of the Harrier. Tata showcased the Buzzard at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and it is expected to be launched in early 2020.

But let’s come back to the Tata H2X or the Hornbill. This sub-compact SUV will be the second car to be based on the modular ALFA platform after the Tata Altroz. The H2X concept has dimensions of 3,840mm in length, 1,822mm in width and 1,635mm in height, while it has a wheelbase of 2,450mm. The production version is also expected to sport similar dimensions.

The Tata H2X Concept or the Hornbill has a rather bold design. It features chunky, squared off wheel arches with sharp edges to the bumpers which give the micro-SUV a boxier, more upright stance and less-rounded proportions than the Nexon. It may be small by dimensions but in the concept form at least, it does not look any less of an SUV.

The Tata H2X will sit below the Nexon in the company’s lineup. It is expected to be powered by a 1.2L, petrol engine that would also be on offer in the Altroz. The H2X will most likely not get a diesel engine given that Tata has said they will discontinue their small capacity diesel engines post BS-VI emission norms become effective. The H2X will rival the likes of the Mahindra KUV100 and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and is expected to be priced between Rs. 5-8 lakhs, ex-showroom.
