The compact SUV has turned the fortunes of the company around. Not only has it been a hit in the domestic market, but it has contributed immensely toward the export side of the business for Nissan too. Going forward, we shall have a slew of exciting products for the Indian market leveraging Nissan’s expansive global portfolio. Here are the details.

Nissan Magnite Facelift

Nissan should expedite the release of the facelifted version of the Magnite. Since its debut in 2020, the Magnite has maintained the same appearance. In an effort to keep the model current, the Japanese automaker recently introduced the AMT version with a non-turbo engine, focusing on improving convenience for buyers. Nissan has consistently introduced minor updates to keep the car in the spotlight amid increasing competition. The next significant step could involve unveiling an official mid-life facelift, potentially incorporating modern features such as wireless smartphone charging, a larger infotainment display, and more. This strategic move aims to position the Magnite competitively against segment leaders like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and Hyundai Venue. No changes are expected in the powertrain options.

Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf stands as one of the leading electric vehicles globally, having entered production in 2010 and continuing to perform well in various regions. Given its success elsewhere, it’s plausible to anticipate its availability in India. The model offers a choice between a 40-kWh or a 62-kWh battery pack. The smaller unit produces 147 hp with a range of 240 km, while the larger battery pack yields 214 hp and extends the range to 364 km. Charging these batteries to full capacity takes around 7 hours with the 240 V charging equipment and 18 hours with the regular power adaptor. Priced at Rs 59.99 lakh in Nepal, equivalent to Rs 37.45 lakh INR, the Nissan Leaf, if introduced in India, would position itself above the Nexon, ZS EV, and Kona Electric in our market.

Nissan C-SUV

Talking to CarBlogIndia at the launch event of the Nissan Magnite EZ-Shift, Rakesh Srivastava, MD, Nissan India confirmed that that are plans to launch a C-SUV in India going forward. He also hinted that Nissan would leverage its international portfolio to launch new SUVs in India. Looking at the global lineup, Nissan has the Qashqai which fits the description of being a C-SUV in India. It could be a perfect rival to the mega-popular Hyundai Creta in our market. This will give the Indian customers even more options to choose from in this segment and the competition will get even fiercer.

Nissan C+ SUV

In the same interview, Mr Rakesh Srivastava also mentioned an SUV which will be larger than the C-SUV. Now, confirming it with the global portfolio, we are looking at the X-Trail. Interestingly, Nissan organized an event earlier this year where it showcased the Qashqai, X-Trail and Juke SUVs. He mentions that this was done in order to get live feedback from potential customers. By incorporating this feedback, Nissan plans to introduce some of these products in India. In addition, he also mentions that Nissan will set aside an investment of Rs 5,300 Crore to launch these products. Therefore, we can prepare ourselves for a bumper year from Nissan. All this is built on a single product, the Magnite.

Author’s Note

Nissan is not a huge player in our market in terms of domestic sales. However, with the Magnite, the brand really shined in the last couple of years. Reading the mindset of the Indian customers after the success of the Magnite and taking feedback from the event it organized where it displayed its international models, Nissan is preparing to have another go at our market. In this phase, it will concentrate on SUVs and EVs. Hence, it wants to leverage the general trends in the automobile industry. We shall have to wait a bit longer to get exact details about of the upcoming cars from Nissan in India in 2024.
