Hyundai is going to finally unveil the next-generation iteration of the Santro (Read More) hatchback in India tomorrow. The compact hatchback, which is so far being referred to as the AH2, is officially set to launch in India on the 23rd of October this year.
As the date for the official unveiling and subsequent launch comes close, Hyundai has started dispensing units of the new Santro to its dealerships. The images of one such unit have surfaced online, giving us a detailed insight into the exterior and interior design of this compact hatchback.
The 2018 Hyundai Santro, from the outside, looks like a mini Grand i10. Up-front, you have a simple and clean bonnet design. Sitting on either side of which big, Grand i10 like wraparound headlamps. Sitting below it is a large bumper with Hyundai’s signature cascading grille design. This is flanked on either edge by large fog-lamps.
Going by the images, the front end of the 2018 Hyundai Santro, looks somewhat sleek. From the side, it might take you a moment or two to decide if the car that you are looking at is the Santro or the Grand i10. It comes with wide windows and a slight kink in the thick C-pillar.
The rear fascia of the new Santro is once again reminiscent of what you will find on the Grand i10. A wide rear glass along with a simple boot lit with small tail-lamps tucked on either side. These spy images do not reveal the rear bumper’s design. Though honestly, there is little left for the imagination.
Peeping into the interiors of the Santro, we are to find a familiar design. Again, it does bear a certain resemblance to the Grand i10. However, if you were to look closely, you will also see a bit of Tucson’s and Verna’s interior design details as well. Particularly, around the centre console and the design of the air-con vents.
Talking about the centre console, as you can see in the images, it gets a large, touchscreen infotainment system. And in the images of the Rear-fascia, you must have noticed the rear camera unit as well, just below the Hyundai logo. Hence, it would be safe to say that the 2018 Santro will get a rear-parking camera, in the top-end variants off-course.
That said, the controls for the air conditioning unit are manual. It means that there is not going to be an automatic climate control unit in this hatchback. By the look of it, the cabin seems to be quite spacious. The colour scheme in dual-tone, black-grey.
There are speculations that the Santro will get the Eon’s 1.1-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine. This unit is good for 63 BHP along with 90 Nm of peak torque. As standard, the 2018 Hyundai Santro will have a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the company is also going to offer a 5-speed AMT gearbox, a first for Hyundai in India.
Prices will fall in-between the range of INR 3 lakhs to 5.5 lakhs. Competition is going to be with the likes of Maruti Wagon R, Renault KWID, Maruti Celerio among the others.
