Tesla Model Y Wheel Covers Upgrade

Aftermarket car modifications could have a positive impact on the performance of cars in some cases as seen in this video.

These aftermarket wheel covers for the Tesla Model Y have added significant range to the performance of the EV. Model Y is the highest-selling EV on the planet. Its practical interior, decent performance, sleek looks, and efficient powertrain are some of the reasons for its mad success. However, with the advancement in technology, new aftermarket car modification players design unique components to maximize the range further. Range anxiety is the biggest hurdle with the mass adoption of EVs. Let us see what the upgraded wheels covers can do to alter that.

Tesla Model Y Wheel Covers Upgraded

The video has been uploaded by Dad’s Toys & Cars on YouTube. The vlogger has a 2023 Tesla Model Y and he bought these new wheel covers that claim range-extending benefits. In the first section of the video, he showcases how easy it is to install these wheel covers on the EV. There is tape that is pasted around the wheel cover and gets stuck to the rims of the car. However, proper care must be taken in order to know which wheel cover goes where since these are directional. The notations are engraved in the covers allowing the owners to know which part goes where.

After installing these on the Model Y, the owner goes for a test run for these new wheel covers. The aim is to do a similar route with these new covers and then with the stock covers to capture the difference, if any. The overall test run is 40 miles and the vlogger repeats the same path to ensure consistency in final test results with similar elevation and road conditions. He notes the distance and energy consumption to calculate the difference in the total driving range in both cases.

Test Results

With these new wheel covers, the total distance covered was 40 miles and the total energy drained was 9 kWh. This results in an average energy consumption of 230 Wh/mi. On the other hand, he swapped these new wheel covers for the stock ones and replicated this same test run. The outcome was quite interesting. For that 40-mile run, the total energy used was 10 kWh with an average energy consumption of 241 Wh/mi. Now, the Tesla Model Y has a usable battery capacity of 76.5 kWh or 76,500 Wh. Dividing this by 230 Wh/mi gives 332.6 mi and dividing this same number by 241 Wh/mi gives 317.4 mil. Hence, there is a clear 15-mile range boost with these new wheel covers because they have a much more aerodynamic design pattern.

What We Think

With EVs, it is all about how to sequester another mile of range. As a result, more new players will emerge as EVs get more popular that will come up with various methods to maximize range. These efficient wheel covers are just a minor example of that. EVs need to be as efficient as possible which is why aerodynamics plays a huge role in electric cars. Also, most performance EVs have specific alloys which are designed for this very purpose. It is understandable that we will see more such innovative tricks to maximize the range of EVs.
