In our car comparison series, we have compared the newly launched hatchback from Toyota, the Toyota Etios Liva with many other small cars like Maruti Wagon R, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i20 etc.. We have saved the best for the last, the Maruti Swift. One major reason that Swift will be the strongest competition for Etios Liva is that the new model of Swift, the Maruti Swift 2011 is yet awaited and will launch in a few weeks (no official launch date announced as yet). Maruti Suzuki has already stopped production of Maruti Swift old model and offered existing Swift bookings to be upgraded to new Swift. In this post, we will compare the Etios Liva with the old model Swift (pre-2011 model) and the upcoming new Swift 2011.
Toyota Etios Liva Exteriors Vs Maruti Swift Exteriors
Toyota Etios Liva features a simple front look, a nice side profile and a very sport rear. The styling is contemporary and elegant with simplicity at front with little chrome to add to richness and elegance. The rear of the car is something which makes its pleasing in looks. In terms of dimensions, its fairly wide, is long and low in height for a good stable structure.

Maruti Swift old model is almost same in length with Liva and has almost same width and slightly more height. The overall structure is more rounded and the looks are fairly different from the crowd. Its something which is not contemporary and will either attract or distract most of the people, with just a few people with neutral opinion about it. Personally I find it very sporty and different in a good way. But since there are lots of them on road already, we take their beauty for granted most of the time.
Maruti Swift Dimension:
Length = 3760mm; Width = 1690mm; Height = 1530mm;
Maruti Swift 2011 is something which will make good even better. The longer, more spacious, lower in height Swift will be a stunner and will be better looking than existing Swift. The increase in length is noticeable and will help more on increasing the interiors space. Slightly larger width will help add more elbow space.

If I have to pick one of these cars based on exterior looks only, my pick will be Maruti Swift 2011 New model for its beautiful looks and style.
Toyota Etios Liva Interiors Vs Maruti Swift Interiors

Toyota Etios Liva has good quality interiors, well packaged with ample of good features and space. One thing which I really like about Liva is the no-nonsense looks, clean and neat looks, extremely spacious legroom. Other thing is the chilled large glove box and intelligently placed AC vents for better cooling. However there are some features which are lacking like the automatic climate control which is there in the top end swift variants. Apart from it, Liva has got a nice cabin feel with ample space and nice features.

When it comes to Interiors of Existing model of Maruti Swift, I don’t get too impressed with it. The main reason being the quality and finish of the Maruti Swift Interiors. For a hatchback on northward side of Rs. 4 Lakhs price tags, Swift gives too little on Interior quality and finish. Although the features are nice in its segment and the drivability of the Swift is much better than other cars in its segment, yet Interiors is something which Maruti needs to think about seriously. I have seen many people not buying Swift because of less than pleasing interior quality.

Maruti Swift 2011 New model Interiors are expected to be better than the existing Swift with better quality of plastics, fabric and other features. Although there are no official pictures of new Swift 2011 released, the one we have is of the European variants which come loaded with lots of convince and comfort features, which will not be same as Indian versions considering the price of the Swift in India. We expect that Maruti will make it pleasing enough to keep the customers from buying other cars just because of the interiors quality. One good thing about the new Swift 2011 will be the increased legroom at the rear which has been just about sufficient in the old model. With increased length, Maruti Swift 2011 will feature more space in cabin making it a more pleasing car.
If I have to pick one of these three cars, my pick will be Etios Liva for its spacious and good quality of material used on the Interiors.

Although the specifications of Maruti Swift seem to be the best among the three, the Kerb weight of the car and gear ratios plays a vast role in the agility of the car. Etios being the lightest among the three is most agile, but in terms of handling and performance, there is no beating the Swift. So far, we believe Swift has an upper hand on the engine performance with high torque, high power, well tuned suspension which suits India roads, and sporty handling characteristics which Swift has.

Official data not available as of now. As per dealer estimates and automobile experts opinion, the prices of the new Swift will be about up to Rs. 30,000 more compared to the existing Swift. This will make the approximate cost of Swift between Rs. 4.4 Lakhs to Rs. 5.9 Lakhs Ex-Showroom Delhi (Estimated price).
If we compare these cars on prices front, with respect to the convenience and safety features these cars give, Maruti Swift seems to be quite right prices. But with the new model on the horizon and a price rise expected, the Zxi model will cost close towards Rs. 6 Lakhs price point which is the amount you need to spend if you want Airbags. We do consider safety features seriously which Toyota seems to provide at lower price points with G (SP) variant. On a bigger pictures, if you are not looking for the most basic variant, Swift is quite attractively priced against Liva. If you want the very basic bare bone version, Liva offers very competitively priced G variant.

If you want a sporty car with great handling, go for Swift. If you can afford to spend some extra bucks, do get the top end variant for safety sake as it features airbags and ABS.
If you want a spacious and elegant car with good safety features and good quality of Interiors at affordable price tag, Liva is a better car for you.
