The Tata Harrier which is currently available with just a manual gearbox in its line-up is soon going to get a Hyundai sourced automatic gearbox.
The Tata Harrier premium compact SUV, the current flagship five-seater from the homegrown automaker made its debut in India last month. Based on a platform which has been inspired by Land Rover’s D8 architecture, the Harrier finds its place above the Nexon at a price point of INR 12.69 lakh to INR 16.25 lakh (ex-showroom). Its competition includes the likes of Mahindra XUV5OO, Jeep Compass, Hyundai Creta and the Nissan Kicks.
Unlike some of its competition, the Harrier is currently available with just a 2WD drive option. Not only this, but it also does not offer an automatic transmission option in its portfolio. At the moment, this SUV is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. It is paired to a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine which is capable of churning out 140 BHP of power along with 350 Nm of peak torque. Not only this, but the Harrier is only available in a five-seater configuration.

Tata Motors has confirmed that they are soon going to introduce a seven-seater iteration of the Harrier in the Indian market. This new version will be based on the same platform but intead is going to have a completely new design to differentiate it from the former. Not only this, but this new iteration will also mark the arrival of an automatic gearbox in this SUV’s portfolio.

The automatic gearbox in question is a 7-speed unit sourced from Hyundai. In the five-seater version, it will be paired to the 140 BHP, 2.0-litre engine. However, in the seven-seater version, this automatic gearbox will be paired to a 170 BHP, 2.0-litre diesel engine. Both the engines are exactly the same but they are going to offer different power outputs.
With the launch of the seven-seater version, we expect Tata Motors to also introduce a 4WD version of this SUV. The current 2WD version is a front wheel drive version whic offers but comes wit Land Rover inspired terrain response system (traction control).
In terms of its pricing, the seven-seater version of the Tata Harrier is expected to fall in-between the range of INR 18 lakh to INR 24 lakh. With this, its primary competition will include the likes of Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and the Mahindra Alturas G4.
