While the ill-fated Mercedes GLC SUV Cyrus Mistry was travelling in was overspeeding, it’s the ‘faulty design’ of the bridge that caused the accident
A forensic team that has investigated the accident which caused the death of business tycoon Cyrus Mistry has concluded that the ‘faulty design’ of the bridge on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway is the reason for the accident. As per the report, the team said that the Mercedes GLC Cyrus was travelling in was over-speeding at the time of the mishap. However, the investigation found that the bridge parapet was protruding into the shoulder lane, which is definitely a fault in the structure’s design. The cause of this accident is definitely the faulty design of the bridge but the reason for the demise of the two occupants travelling in the ill-fated SUV was the non-usage of rear seatbelts.

Faulty Design Causes Accident, Not Wearing Seatbelt Causes Death
Cyrus Mistry and Jahangir Pandole, the two rear occupants of the SUV, received multiple injuries and “blunt thorax trauma” in the mishap in which they lost their lives. “The impact on the bodies of both Mistry and Pandole was sudden and forceful because of the speed of the car. It led to multiple injuries and blunt thorax trauma.” A medical officer from JJ Hospital said. “The multiple injuries also included rupturing of veins causing internal bleeding. However, the primary autopsy report could only indicate some vague symptoms. A detailed analysis will explain everything and the exact cause of the death,” he added.

“It is to be kept in mind that in the event of a crash, if the passenger has not fastened his seat belt, the deployment of the airbag could end up killing the passenger, even if the crash does not kill. Six airbags imply that the rear seat passengers are also covered. The practice of fastening seat belts in the rear seat is very low even in big cities and metros and near-zero in the mid to smaller cities of India. Worse still, the awareness that if an airbag deploys without a seat belt, it could be injurious or fatal – is very low in India,” said KK Kapila, President(emeritus) International Road Federation.
Mercedes Benz Launches Investigation
Mercedes Benz India Ltd (MBIL) has set up a team to look into the mishap involving the ill-fated GLC 220d 4MATIC SUV. Among many other safety features, the luxury SUV comes equipped with as many as 7 airbags. Moreover, it features a ‘pre-safe system.’ Due to this, the front seat belts get electrically pre-tensioned in dangerous situations. This brings down the forward movement of the occupants during retardation. “As a responsible brand respecting customer privacy, our team is cooperating with the authorities where possible, and we will provide any clarifications to them directly as required,” a statement issued by MBIL read.
