Mahindra has confirmed that they are working on a new SUV for the domestic market based on the SsangYong Tivoli. Codenamed S201, the upcoming Mahindra SUV will share its platform with the Tivoli. This news puts the earlier rumours of Mahindra launching the Tivoli in India to rest. According to insider info, the development work on the S201 has been underway for some time now. Expect the launch to take place in 2018. An Auto Expo 2018 debut might be on the cards. Read on to know more about the upcoming Mahindra S201 SUV.

Mahindra has acquired the license to use SsangYong Tivoli’s platform for its upcoming SUV. However, that is where the similarities end apparently. In terms of design, the S201 will be completely different from the Tivoli. Mahindra will take inputs from Pininfarina and SsangYong for the styling of the upcoming SUV. Also, the new SUV will be slightly smaller than the Tivoli. Currently, Mahindra has considerable resources at its disposal for the development of new products. Apart from Pininfarina and SsangYong, Mahindra will also utilise the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai and theย Mahindra North America Technical Center for the development of the S201. The latter is also involved in the development of their upcomingย U321 MPV.

The S201 could be on track for a debut at the 2018 Auto Expo. Mahindra also has an MPV and petrol variants of the XUV500 and Scorpio in the pipeline. Pictures of test mules of the SsangYong Tivoli have been doing the rounds for a while now. These are merely early prototypes of the upcoming S201 SUV.

Mahindra S201 SUV Specifications
Mahindra has been working on a new range of engines in collaboration with SsangYong. These include petrol and diesel engines. The S201, in all probability, will draw power from this new lineup of engines. Expect power and torque outputs to be at par with competitors. A 1.5 L Petrol and a 1.6 L diesel engine could power the upcoming Mahindra S201.
Mahindra S201 SUV – Design
In terms of styling, the upcoming SUV from Mahindra will borrow heavily from the SsangYong Tivoli. The exteriors could a mix the Tivoli’s design with signature Mahindra styling elements such as a toothed grille, etc. The interiors could be given a makeover as well. Mahindra is likely to add a new steering wheel and a new touchscreen system. Top end variants could even come with a sunroof.
